Can You Still Have Period If Pregnant – You cannot have your period during pregnancy, although some women have vaginal bleeding during pregnancy. Some even report periodic bleeding that seems like a normal period to them. But vaginal bleeding during pregnancy is not the same as menstruation.
Find out why spotting can be normal during pregnancy, and why it’s important to let your provider know if you have any bleeding or spotting during pregnancy.
Can You Still Have Period If Pregnant
Pregnant. Each month, your uterus forms a thick, blood-rich lining in preparation for an egg to lodge there. If you don’t get pregnant that month, you lose this tissue and blood, and this is your period.
Pms Vs. Pregnancy Symptoms: How To Tell The Differences
But once an egg lodges in the uterine lining, hormones tell the blood-rich tissue to stay intact to support the growing baby. And you won’t lose it and get your period again until your pregnancy is over.
Non-menstrual bleeding occurs during pregnancy for several reasons. It is important to know the difference between spotting and bleeding. Spotting is the occasional drop or two of blood on your underwear, but not enough to cover a panty liner. Bleeding, on the other hand, is a heavier flow of blood that requires a liner or pad to keep the blood from soaking your clothes.
Some spotting in early pregnancy is normal and occurs in 15 to 25 percent of pregnancies. The cervix may bleed more easily during pregnancy because more blood vessels develop there. Spotting can occur in the 10 to 14 days after fertilization when the fertilized egg implants in the lining of the uterus. This is known as ‘implantation bleeding’.
Always call your provider if you experience bleeding or spotting during pregnancy. It could be a sign of something more serious, such as an infection, problems with the placenta, a threatened miscarriage, or an ectopic pregnancy, which can be life-threatening. (See our article on vaginal bleeding during pregnancy for a full rundown of possible causes.)
Implantation Bleeding: How To Differentiate It From Your Periods
Unlike your period, spotting during pregnancy only lasts about 1 to 2 days. If this spotting is implantation bleeding, it will likely occur a few days before your next expected period. It will be much lighter and you won’t have to change sanitary napkins. Implantation bleeding requires no treatment and will stop on its own. Even if you think you have implantation bleeding, you should call your health care provider to let them know.
Call your doctor or midwife immediately if you notice any signs of bleeding or spotting during pregnancy – even if the bleeding has stopped. Many women who bleed a little during pregnancy give birth without complications, but you may need an evaluation to rule out serious problems. Also watch for other symptoms:
Go to the nearest emergency room if your doctor’s office is closed and you can’t reach your provider. If they determine that your bleeding is not serious, possible treatments may include things like relaxing and avoiding sex, travel, and rigorous exercise. It is important that you follow your provider’s recommendations to keep both you and your baby healthy.

Can You Be Pregnant And Have A Period?
Maggie Getz is a freelance writer and editor specializing in health, wellness and motherhood. She lives in Colorado with her husband and young son and daughter. She enjoys hiking, yoga, baking (and eating said baked goods), as well as connecting with other moms. Q: Hi there! I had sex last month when I was on my period and we only realized the condom broke after my boyfriend came. I took a pregnancy test and it was negative, and I had a bleed last week, that may have been my period, but I’m not sure. Can you still get your period when you are pregnant?
If an egg doesn’t get fertilized and doesn’t implant into the uterine wall, then the body is like “Well, we don’t need this uterine lining that we’ve been building up all month,” and you have a period. All of the uterine lining is then shed from the body out of the vagina (which is what menstrual blood actually is). When a fertilized egg implants in the uterus (aka pregnancy), the body says, “Whoa, I need all this uterine lining to nourish the egg!” and you don’t have a period.
Bleeding can happen while a person is pregnant, it’s just not menstruation. Reasons for this can be:
Spotting, implantation bleeding, and ectopic pregnancy are the three we get asked about the most, so we’ve got more information below. It should be noted that implantation bleeding and ectopic pregnancy bleeding are generally uncommon.
How To Get Pregnant If You’re Not Getting Your Period
It may also help to remember that using hormonal birth control or emergency contraceptive pills (such as Plan B) can also cause different bleeding than you are used to. Hormones can alter the bleeding during your period, and using something like Plan B can make your next period early or even up to 2 weeks late.
The only way to know for sure if you are pregnant is to take a pregnancy test. It is not possible to tell from missed or irregular periods alone. Pregnancy tests are accurate if taken 14 days after you had sex and there was a risk of pregnancy. And they are very accurate! See one of our recent blog posts for more info:
Assuming the scenario described above, there really is no risk of pregnancy if one is menstruating. Eggs can only be fertilized between 24-48 hours after ovulation. Ovulation usually occurs 11-16 days before a person expects their period. When a period occurs, the egg and endometrium are not usable and are washed away. Even if sperm were introduced into the equation at this point, they wouldn’t be able to do anything (since sperm die within 5 days). If someone has a very short cycle, such as less than 25 days between periods, there may be a potential risk of pregnancy from sperm left over after having sex during a period. Spotting is light bleeding between periods. While menstrual bleeding is generally so heavy that people use different menstrual products to absorb it, spotting is more likely to show up as just a few light specks of blood that you might notice in your underwear or when wiping in the bathroom. These spots are usually a different color (often red, dark red, or brownish) and a different consistency than your normal menstrual blood. Causes for this can include hormonal birth control, emergency contraceptive pills, urinary tract infections, STIs, pelvic inflammatory disease, polyps, ovulation, early pregnancy, or even particularly rough sex.
How Late Can A Period Be Before You Should Start To Worry?
This is a small amount of bleeding that some people experience 6-12 days after an egg has been fertilized. While it can happen when you might be expecting your period, implantation bleeding is not the same type of bleeding you would likely experience during your period. The table below is a general comparison:
In an ectopic pregnancy, a fertilized egg attaches somewhere outside the uterus (usually in a fallopian tube). An early symptom of this is early vaginal bleeding. Other more serious symptoms include:
If you experience any of these symptoms, it is generally recommended that you contact a doctor as soon as possible.

Period While Pregnant
Many women wonder if they can get their periods during pregnancy. It is common for this question to arise, as spotting or bleeding can occur at different times during pregnancy. Although having a small bleed is generally not serious, it is advisable to see a specialist if it could be an indication of a problem in the pregnancy.
It is not possible to be pregnant and menstruating at the same time, although it is normal to experience a small amount of vaginal bleeding unrelated to menstruation.
About 30% of women experience bleeding during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester, although it is not uncommon at other times as well. In fact, about one in 200 pregnant women experiences vaginal bleeding in the second and third trimesters.

Can You Ovulate Without Having A Period?
Menstruation is the shedding of the endometrium, that is, the process by which the endometrium detaches from the walls of the uterus when the egg has not been fertilized.
The brain sends hormonal signals to the ovary so that if the egg is fertilized and then the embryo implants, the uterine lining does not detach and develops properly to house, nourish and nourish it.
