Integrating A Hot Tub Half Into Deck

Many people who buy hot tubs don’t know about spa pillows. Pouring concrete or building a deck to support a new purchase can be costly and cumbersome, so hot tub retailers should promote the pads during their sales presentation. Spa pads not only work on any well-drained area – such as grass, dirt, sand or gravel – but they are also moveable if the owner wants to move the hot tub.

“A lot of people don’t realize it’s available, so we train our salespeople to bring it up in conversation,” says Christian Staples, owner of Arctic Spas in Salt Lake City, Utah. “When talking to the customer, we discuss the simplicity of it all and tell them we’re just going to get it out of the tub. We can put it together and then your bathtub will have a great foundation for it. It really makes it easier for the customer to pour the concrete pad.”

Ken Noble, CEO and President of EZ Pads Inc. based in Vista, California, says the company has averaged 24 percent year-over-year growth with EZ Pad spa pads over the past five years, thanks to expanded distribution to Canada and Australia.

“We’ve seen increased spending on EZ Pad branding through Google and Microsoft searches on the web,” he says. EZ Pad has been on the market since 1999 and has more than 50,000 installations to date.

How Much Does A Hot Tub Cost To Install? A Budgeting Guide (2023)

Noble believes hot tub retailers should use spa pads as a sales tool, and to help with that, the company offers point-of-sale brochures, a POS display box with bullet points for the showroom, and wholesale pricing. They are also available to answer questions via email, text or 800 number.

“Educate your customers that they make it easier and less expensive to install a hot tub/spa, and you’ll sell more hot tubs/spa,” he says.

“We are able to give our dealers a level playing field without worrying that consumers will find the EZ Pad cheaper online,” says Noble. “Retailers often offer consumers the opportunity to get advice directly from the manufacturer in the dealer’s store.”

Mike Genova, president of Leisure Concepts, Inc. based in Spokane, Washington, the makers of SmartDeck, says retailers should offer spa pads as a value-add opportunity for their customers. Genova says it’s cheaper than using a local contractor to create a concrete base, and the end-user doesn’t have to worry about the weather or the contractor’s schedule to install the hot tub.

“Our focus on dealers is that when selling a hot tub, they have to go through a checklist of things consumers should have or might need, including a spa pad,” he says. “Everyone wins. The consumer gets a better product and the seller can make a sale.”

Jack Gawrys, Proprietary Sales Coordinator at Confer Plastics Inc. of North Tonawanda, New York, makers of Handi-Spa placemats, says many retailers are taking the wrong viewpoint by selling the pads and missing out on an opportunity in an attempt to make too much money from a sale.

When people mention they have a particular guy, Gawrys suggests this is the perfect time to explain how a spa pad can save you money with minimal surface preparation.

“It can save someone a few thousand, and getting a specific job can be quite a process,” he says. “Explain that with spa pads, all you have to do is dig up and then put the hot tub on top of it. Hardware-free design provides a hot tub in the customer’s backyard.” Hot tubs and spas come in many shapes and sizes and can be equipped with many accessories. Accordingly, they have a wide range of prices.

Choosing the right spa depends on its intended use, the size of the deck, and the structural changes that will be required for the deck. In addition, you need to know the cost of installation, daily expenses, and how much return on investment you can expect if you sell your home.

It started with this icon of serene living, a redwood hot tub. Fiberglass versions with circulating nozzles, called “spa”, soon followed. Today, the terms “jacuzzi” and “spa” are used interchangeably, but since most units are equipped with jets, the term “spa” is more commonly used.

Choosing a spa can be a challenge. You’ll have to choose from a dizzying array of accessories, including cup holders, colored LED lights, and even waterproof keyboards.

“Gadgets are meant to be eye-catching when shopping,” warns Erich Johanson, an experienced spa installer in Olympia, Washington. It recommends choosing established manufacturers and narrowing down your choices from there. “Look at national brands and find one you like,” she says. “Then choose a model that has the features you want.”

How To Shop For A Hot Tub

Its main recommendation is “full foam” insulation – a high-density, closed-cell polyurethane foam that fills the space between the fiberglass tub casing and the outer casing, helping to reduce heat loss. In addition, full foam insulation helps to reduce noise and increases the stability of the entire device.

Also check the installation costs. They will depend on the size of the spa and how easy it is to get it where you need it. In some cases, limited access may require the use of a crane to lower the spa into place. For an 8-person spa, expect to pay around $300 for delivery and setup.

The safest – and most economical – place for a spa is on the lower level of the terrace. A deck only a few steps off the ground, if built to code, it should be able to support 100 pounds per square foot – an 8 x 8 filled spa at 6,000 pounds. works up to about 94 pounds per square foot, just within limits. Please check local regulations for restrictions on spa installation on the deck.

Even better is a reinforced concrete pad, a great option if you are planning a new deck or intend to add it to an existing one. A 4-inch slab will safely withstand 115 pounds per square foot.

If you want to place the bath on the deck more than a few feet off the ground or on a higher level of the deck, things get complicated. You will need to hire a structural engineer to provide specs for site specific frame construction to support the weight.

Expect to pay an engineer between $300 and $500 for these services. The essential framing of a typical backyard deck may only cost a few hundred dollars, but expect to pay much more if your deck is a high-flying structure perched on a hillside.

Spas require a nearby source of electricity. Since water is involved, any electrical connection to the spa must include ground fault protection (GFCI). This clever device shuts down the system within milliseconds if it detects the slightest change in current flow caused by a short circuit. Some spas have an extension cord with built-in GFCI that can be connected to a 110V, 20A circuit.

Larger units require at least one dedicated 220V, 50A circuit. Also, there must be an emergency switch within sight of the spa, but no closer than 5 feet and no further than 50 feet. A new circuit and cutoff will cost about $800.

Access to water is simple; fill the spa with the external hose. The spa then heats and circulates the water. Insulated bathtub covers reduce evaporation, but the bathtub will require occasional refilling. When it’s time to empty the unit, all spas have built-in hose bibs so you can drain the water.

Getting in and out of the spa creates opportunities for mishaps. A handrail is a good idea for older – and younger – users. A lid with a lock is a must if you have children.
