Laying Ceramic Tile Over Vinyl Flooring

Laying Ceramic Tile Over Vinyl Flooring – All the supplies and steps needed for installing sheet vinyl flooring over old tile yourself for a temporary fix.

Favorite project ever! Well, I say about maybe 50% of all the projects we do around here, but this one is definitely up there on the charts of most-transformative-for-the-lowest-cost.

Laying Ceramic Tile Over Vinyl Flooring

If you’ve been following along on our master bathroom renovation, Robert and I painted the walls, trim, and cabinets until this past weekend. But ceramic tile flooring also looks like this:

Installing Luxury Vinyl Over Existing Tiles.

Even though we’ve gotten our ceramic tile in the kitchen and hallway bathroom using a grout pen in the past, this floor seems to go a little further. And since we’re sticking with the existing countertop and tub for now (until the real gut/renovation is down the road), I wanted a floor that would update the 80s beige a little better.

Unless I want to steer clear of the tile color and stenciling route like many DIYers have been doing here lately. With a 3-month-old baby in the house, I don’t like the idea of greenhouses and I want this job to be quick and installation in about an hour or two.

Normally, if you are doing a major renovation, I would not suggest installing vinyl flooring over tile. I think that for the right land, it should be done in the “right” way. But for a quick Phase 1 fix, it’s a great DIY-able solution to tide you over until you’re ready for a junk contractor job.

So if you want to do the same thing to some of your tile floors that have seen better days, here’s how we make it happen.

Is Luxury Vinyl Tile Cost Effective?

2. Once the mortar has dried in about 24-48 hours, you can sand any rough spots with medium grit sand.

3. Wipe the floor and remove any dirt with a duster since you don’t want to trap anything under your vinyl floor sheet.

4. Remove the quarter round and baseboards with a crowbar and mallet or drop. Here’s a post to help you with it, if you haven’t already. Set the quarter trim and base boxes aside to be reinstalled after the vinyl sheet is on (assuming they are in good condition).

5. Measure all the edges around the room and draw a picture of your room on a piece of paper using the measurements. Don’t have a dull moment with this guy around, even with the random measurement jobs. 😉

Things To Know About Peel And Stick Flooring

Include measurements of any obstacles in the room as well. We already removed our old toilet (this is a great video for removing the toilet with a good tip to prevent water from leaking everywhere), so we measured where to cut a hole in our sheet vinyl for that as well.

7. Roll out your vinyl sheet and take a nap. He’s just playing. 😉 Well… if you do, we won’t blame you. But at least a sheet of vinyl (don’t turn it upside down for measuring/cutting in the next step).

8. Use your diagram as a reference to mark your measurements by applying a tape measure to the edges of the vinyl sheet to create a template.

10. And cut the vinyl sheets with sharp scissors or a utility knife. After your floor is cut, wipe away any remaining chalk lines (Mr. Clean Magic Erasers work great).

11. Pull your vinyl cut sheet into the room and roll it out. Cut the remaining spaces with a utility knife as needed as you place it in the room.

12. Reinstall your baseboards and quarter round the trim with a nail gun to hold the edges of your floor. (This is for our manufacturer’s instructions for a specific vinyl floor, but your flooring manufacturer may require you to apply an adhesive first.)

13. Then, use white silicone caulk to fill the cracks on the reinstalled trim. And attach the vinyl edging sheet where it meets the tub/shower/door too.

But with the combination of warm and cool tones in this landscape, I feel like it makes the blue and beige unified.

Vinyl Flooring Pros And Cons Worth Considering

So now the next thing on the agenda is to wipe it off, touch up some paint, and install a new toilet (because the old one needs to be pulled out for good).

I will be painting the Benjamin Moore Iron Wrought door this week to match the rest of the house which is already a deep charcoal color.

And I’m going to put up a window shade so the whole area won’t get a peep show when we’re able to use this bathroom again. Ha!

I keep debating on whether or not I should hang a long curtain in front of this shower door to camouflage it though. What do you think? Cover it or leave it?

What Type Of Flooring Can You Install Over Ceramic Tile?

We are finally at home over here! And then we’ll get ready for our first major renovation elsewhere in the house that I can’t wait to show you all about. Liar!!! One thing at a time though. Today I’m sharing how to install new vinyl floors on top of an existing ceramic tile floor with a few simple steps to make sure it’s the right level. We use Golden Select Vinyl Plank in Smokey Barrel.

When things suddenly and drastically changed this spring with the pandemic and our spring break vacations being canceled, we decided to buckle down and tackle some home projects. We haven’t decided whether to replace all the tile in our basement as it seems like a huge job since the ceramic tile is laid directly on the concrete sub-floor. But we also knew that we really wanted to change and improve the look in the basement as well as create a more consistent floor selection throughout the space. Old tile is uneven, difficult to clean, hard on feet, and cold in winter. It’s also not exactly our style or our color preference.

In January I redid all the walls white and added a wallpaper feature wall. I also bought some area rugs to cover the solid tile and warm up this space, which definitely worked well as an interim measure.

But once we decided to redo the family room, updating the ceiling, flooring, and trim, the project kind of snowballed in with all of the basement common areas and hallways.

We went down to Costco before the pandemic really blew up and bought enough boxes of Golden Select Vinyl Plank flooring (in Smokey Barrel) to cover the entire basement floor except for the three bedrooms that have the carpet is in good shape (and which keeps things warm in the winter). We could have ordered Golden Select from Costco online, but we were in a hurry to get started!

Before we begin, we remove the wall baseboards and make sure to drain and clean our floors properly.

I purchased this game patch kit from my local hardware store and mixed it according to the package instructions. Because the tile has a faux-slate kind of texture to it, we want to level it before putting the vinyl on top.

I used a wide putty knife to apply the compound to the grout joints and recessed areas, making sure to spread it evenly and remove any excess product.

Since the family room was already planked, we lined up the floorboards with that door so that the line would continue. We laid it out first, working back from the family room door, to determine how wide we needed it to be.

You can see below, where the door is open on the left side of the picture, how the boards were lined up so that they were in a straight line and flowed from the door into the basement family room. Then, we used a different method as the two rooms are slightly different heights, but we still wanted the board to be directly between the two rooms.

The installation went much faster than we had expected, given that we had a few minor cuts to make.

We encountered some areas that were not level, so it was important to build up the floor with patching compound to make sure that the vinyl plank was installed on a level surface. We need to do this where the floor stands before entering the furnace/engine room in the basement.

We were very pleased with how easy it was to install this vinyl plank flooring (read more details and installation tips in this post).

You can also watch the video I made with our tips – the process is the same with the addition of making sure your floor is completely level (and patching as needed) when you go directly over an old tile floor!

No matter how much white paint I use on the wall, and how much I scrub the floor, it always looks dirty and old. Having a uniform, easy to clean, beautifully textured floor downstairs completely transforms the basement area!
