One of the great things about Chalk Paint™ is that it sticks to almost anything. And for some things you really don’t want. An example was when we had a dog and it ended up with a very nicely painted tail. Yes, a black and white collie with an emperor’s silky tail! Very catchy! Fortunately, it washed off really easily. Up until now, most of us have used Chalk Paint™ on the furniture, walls and floors of your house, but today we’re moving outside the house. Did you know that Chalk Paint™ even works outdoors! Oh yes, it’s especially good for brick, concrete, stone and terracotta – and you don’t need to grow it. You can even breathe new life into tired garden furniture.
Exterior Paint For Concrete Walls
Wait a moment! Here are a few things to keep in mind before you rush out with a brush in one hand and a container of Chalk Paint™ in the other. What? What can go wrong?? Well, for one thing, it fades in the sun. Second, it ages beautifully with the elements. It is important to remember that it is a water-based decorative paint and does not have weather-resistant or protective properties. I repeat it. It is a decorative paint and not a protective paint. Depending on the look you want and the conditions you’re in, you may find it needs a new coat on a regular basis.

I’m sure I’ve mentioned this somewhere before, but remember that Chalk Paint™ is not recommended for teak or other oily woods. To avoid disappointment, always try to paint a small test area first! Most of the problems that arise when people paint garden furniture on wood – you may not know that it is teak or other oily wood, or it may have been treated with something more weather resistant (eg Cuprinol, Duckback etc.). Remember that applying water-based paint to a water-resistant surface is never easy. All of these things can affect paint adhesion, and as I’ve said before, the best advice is to paint a test patch if you’re not sure.
Some colors can fade quite quickly if used in areas exposed to very strong sunlight – this is especially true of reds. Oh the joys of living in sunny France! Water-based exterior
Ior varnish with UV protection is recommended if this is likely to be a problem. For garden furniture, we strongly recommend a water-thinned exterior varnish layer, which protects against stains and keeps the surface beautiful for much longer. For best results, get a varnish with UV protection to prevent color fading.
So far, I’ve mentioned using a water-based exterior polish, and here’s why. Wax and varnish are not suitable for outdoor use. Both are waterproof surfaces, but not completely impervious – water can get under the sealant and cause the paint to peel or bubble. And on top of everything else, in the hot sun any wax will melt and disappear and also cause the floor varnish to turn yellow. Don’t waste your time or money on this, you will regret it quickly.
Concrete Block Paint Exterior
If you are painting exterior work “in situ” wait for good weather, and at least not when rain is near (Yes I know, easier said than done this time of year). The piece must be COMPLETELY dry before you begin. If you can let it dry in the sun after painting, this will help the paint adhere to the surface. Basically, you bake paint onto the surface to get a harder finish.

Although this home is log cabin style, this process is exactly the same for areas such as cement or brick foundations, cinder block walls, and stucco style walls.
For most uneven parts, a hand-held sander with a 4-inch diameter diamond grinding wheel will work well. The paints I recommend have very good covering power and the ability to fill hairline cracks, but the paint does not cover a poorly patched or flaky surface.

If the area has been previously painted and the paint is failing (flaking, chipping, or flaking), remove the loose paint with a metal scraper and sand the edges smooth with a concrete sander.
You may encounter several problems when painting exterior masonry and concrete. Here are some of the challenges we had to navigate:
The first step starts with a clean surface; clean and dry the concrete properly. Since we painted the entire house and painted the stucco, a pressure washer and exterior house cleaner or mold remover worked very well. It was amazing how much dirt and mold came off!
If I had to do this again, the only thing I wouldn’t do is use premixed pipe to patch the concrete. It is difficult to work with. Half of them burst out from behind and made a terrible mess. The texture is sticky and too thin for successful wall painting. We tried several brands with no better luck.
Pros And Cons Of Using Paint And Primer In One?
Normally, I would mix the grout with a thick peanut butter consistency and fill the cracks that way. If you have small cracks, you can use a mortar bag like this one. It’s like the piping bag you use to frost cupcakes.
You can also use this type of quick-setting hydraulic cement to fill cracks in walls. As an added bonus, it acts as a waterproof seal in case of leaks.
For the most part, concrete is such a rough, porous surface that you don’t need a primer. Exceptions may be certain stains that can bleed through. In these cases, I recommend a high-quality sealing layer. To avoid confusion, the paints I recommend have the added benefit of a waterproof seal. This can be an epoxy or acrylic paint, so you don’t need an additional product.
However, if you have particularly stubborn stains and have removed so much surface dirt and oil from the stain, it is best to allow the first coat time to fully dry and set before applying the second coat.
