Benjamin Moore is our primary paint source for exterior paint. Among our favorites from their 2022 collection, we’ve narrowed it down to the following trendiest shades.
Upgrades That Can Increase The Value Of Your Manufactured Home
Earth tones and color palettes inspired by nature are trending in 2022. Aegean olive is a warm, deep brown-green that we love for buyers who want to get down to earth. It’s a beautiful accent color, but our designers also recommend it as a base color, as in the monochromatic brick house above.
Benjamin Moore’s Black Forest Green is one of our favorite dark shades for the outdoors in 2022. It’s a blackened shade of green with an LRV of 2.72, meaning it’s shamelessly dark (learn all about LRV – and why it matters – here). We love the weight, warmth and complexity of Black Forest Green.
On the lighter side of greens and earth tones is another one of our favorites for 2022: Benjamin Moore’s Sussex Green. It’s still on the dark end, with an LRV of just under 20, but it feels fresh and warm, especially in environments with lots of natural light (like the desert above). We love to combine Sussex Green with copper accents.
Moving away from green, but still in the realm of dark, complex neutrals, is Deep River. This dark gray color has blue undertones. Our designers are increasingly turning to Deep River for clients looking for a modern farmhouse look with a bit of edginess.
Exterior Color Inspiration
Ocean Floor is another deep gray from Benjamin Moore, but its blue tones are more pronounced than Deep River. It has an LRV of 12.5 so it’s still dark. If you’re looking for blue exterior house colors in 2022, Ocean Floor should be on your radar.
Love the complex dark gray and blue exterior color palette, but want to go a little bolder? Our designers are mining Stonecutter right now. It is deeply saturated and can be well matched with natural stone in all shades, as illustrated by the house project above.
Midsummer’s Eve is currently our co-founder Allison’s favorite color. (Will it be named our Best Exterior Color for 2022? Stay tuned!) It’s a dark, dramatic, complex neutral with an LRV of 5.8. We think of Midsummer as rich, moody browns and blacks. It looks great on the exterior of vacation homes and lake homes – or brings a vacation vibe to a residence year-round. Deeper still is our next most popular exterior color for 2022: Black Beauty. Black home exteriors will continue to be in vogue through 2022 and we expect more homeowners to turn specifically to black beauty as their almost black hue.

Classic Gray is actually more of an off white and is the lightest exterior paint color on our list. It has a passive purple tint that you should be aware of, but it turns out that it doesn’t show its face that much outside the home. Classic Gray is a timeless neutral color with durability.
While Benjamin Moore is often our top pick for exterior paint, Sherwin Williams is a close second. And some of their color options are big hits with homeowners looking for trendy exterior color palettes. From our 13 Sherwin Williams favorites this year, we’ve narrowed it down to the following top 8 contenders.
Anonymous is a complex, sophisticated neutral color with medium to dark undertones. It’s brown-green-grey – it’s a complete chameleon, meaning accents and surroundings play a big part in how you read. Due to the lush landscape and wooden and almost black accents in the design of the house above, we perceive it first as green, then brown, with a touch of gray. (Note how it sounds different in the rendering at the end of this post!)
Sherwin Williams Iron Ore has been around for a while and we plan to continue recommending its use in 2022. This paint color is rich charcoal with some softness and warmth. Its lack of undertones makes it easy to combine with a wide range of other colors and materials.
Bold Colors To Paint Your Home’s Exterior
Dwelling in the gray world but moving lighter, Dorian Gray is another Sherwin Williams paint color on our list. With LRV 39, Dorian Gray has a medium gray undertone and is full of warmth. We usually recommend this color to customers looking for a comfortable, traditional or transitional design.

Next, dried thyme is our answer to Benjamin Moore’s green hues above, but outside of the Sherwin Williams palette. It has the look of khaki green pants and looks great as a complement to a medium to dark stain.
Black Fox is a bold, deep and complex neutral that we love to use in modern and contemporary home and commercial projects. This is another shade of brown and black, similar to Midsummer Night (above), but slightly lighter on the LRV scale.
How To Choose The Best Home Exterior Paint Colors
Caviar is an almost black shade that we use more and more. It provides the drama and depth that many of our clients are looking for.
Beige is making a comeback, and Gray Area is our favorite beige for 2022. It looks amazing with off-whites, off-blacks and splashes across the color spectrum. The gray zone gives the rear part of the body over modern ski-houses an atmosphere that is more refined than hockey. We are big fans.
Finally we come to the fun color that always makes us question our knowledge of marine biology: the porpoise. Are real porpoises really dark grey? And how are they different from dolphins? That’s why we are experts in the field of colors. Either way, the Porpoise is a versatile mid-range neutral weapon that we’ll all be seeing more of. It’s basically the same color as Benjamin Moore’s Deep Creek, with the same LRV. The porpoise has a bit more blue in the mix, but we’d be hard-pressed to tell the colors apart quickly.
