How Much Did Avatar Cost To Make – James Cameron, director of Avatar: The Way of Water, previously mentioned that the sequel was “really bloody expensive” to produce, and now a new report has shed some light on the hugely expensive budget.
Due to several setbacks, the upcoming sequel took over a decade (13 years to be precise) to be released. One of those challenges was limited to budget. Previous reports have claimed that Avatar 2 cost $250 million to produce.

In addition, it has also been reported that the total budget for the four planned installments of the Avatar series is a whopping $1 billion, which equates to an average budget of around $250 million per film.
Avatar 2 Budget Reportedly Revealed (& It’s Much Larger Than Expected)
The budget for Avatar: The Way of the Water was said to be one of the most expensive in Hollywood history, as sources from The Hollywood Reporter (THR) put it somewhere between $350 million and $400 million.
The most expensive film in Hollywood right now is 2011’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Directed by Johnny Depp, the film has a budget of $379 million (adjusted for inflation). If Avatar 2’s budget is bigger than On Stranger Tides, it could be the most expensive movie of all time
Disney and 20th Century Fox also announced through THR that Avatar 2 has officially opened in China, becoming one of the few Hollywood films to make its theatrical debut there since the pandemic began. The sequel has also been confirmed to hit theaters in China on Friday December 16th, the same day it hits North American theaters.
The first Avatar was a huge hit in China, grossing a whopping $261.8 million after several re-releases, on its way to becoming the highest-grossing film of all time.

To top it off, The Way of Water is also set to hit theaters at IMAX theaters in China.
THR’s sources mentioned that talks about the Avatar 2 release in China have been in the works “for weeks,” but the announcement came two days after news of Bob Iger’s return as CEO of The Walt Disney Co. in the wake of Bob’s departure Chapek.
Avatar 2 director James Cameron’s recent comments that the film is “expensive” are understandable now that the budget range for the sequel has been announced.
It’s unknown if Avatar: The Way of the Water will achieve a similar box office success as the first film, but it appears that it will take a big box office to break even.
Avatar The Last Airbender Movie 2010
Cameron went as far as claiming that Avatar 2 had to be “the third or fourth highest-grossing film in history” to be successful, saying that that was the “threshold.”
While the sequel’s release in China is expected to help it achieve a major box office success, everything will depend on the film’s development after it grossed $150-$170 million in its opening weekend.
Hopefully, the sequel’s groundbreaking sequel combined with its emotional (and tragic) story will be more than enough for fans to see Avatar: The Way of Water when it premieres in theaters on Friday, December 16th.
