How To Make Business Stickers At Home – Stickers are among the most versatile and cost-effective ways to get the word out. You’ve seen it yourself: Well-placed stickers on cars, signs, door jambs, or a bathroom stall can get more attention than online PPC ads. As with most print media, stickers offer the added benefit of having a longer shelf life for a low one-time cost. This bumper sticker on the back of your car will not incur a monthly fee and will send the message until you peel it off or the print fades.
Stickers mostly have graphics and labels offer information like an address, logo or phone number for example. For the purposes of this article, since the process of printing stickers and labels is quite similar, we will be using stickers and labels interchangeably. How To Make Business Stickers At Home
First, you need to think about the appropriate medium to print your stickers on. Stickers are usually printed on paper or vinyl. Knowing the differences between them will help you get the results you want.
Sheet Stickers, Custom Sticker Sheet Printing
Paper labels. This is the simplest and cheapest form of stickers. Paper labels are also great for vinyl record covers, customizing name tags, creating instant photo stickers and dozens of other creative ideas. Not sure which self-adhesive paper to buy? These die-cut labels are ideal for jars and bottles and add personality to homemade products. If you don’t want a white border around your stickers, clear gloss sticker paper is your best bet. Clear Sticker Paper is great for printing clear stickers and looks great on windows, clear bottles, and product labels.
With full sheets of sticker paper, it’s helpful to start thinking about how you’re going to cut your stickers. If all you need is a simple rectangular or square sticker, a regular cutter should work. However, if you’re thinking of something more detailed, consider a Cricut machine. Remember to leave enough space between stickers when designing your sticker template.
In most cases, printable paper labels are not waterproof or weatherproof and therefore do not hold up well to the elements. If you need water-resistant stickers, look for matte label paper AND make sure you’re using a printer that uses pigment ink (and no, it’s not a good idea to use pigment ink on a dye ink printer). Pigment ink is widely known for its archival properties. Pigment-based ink adheres to paper better than dye-based ink, making it more water and fade resistant. Best Printable Clear Sticker Paper For Silhouette Stickers
Once you’ve printed your stickers, the best way to protect them from water or direct sunlight is to laminate them. There are several ways to do this, you can either buy clear laminating sheets, which are a clear plastic film that lays on top of the sticker, or you can use a thermal laminator, which is more convenient if you print in bulk. If you’re on a budget, go for the sheet – we recommend buying a clear laminating sheet that’s slightly larger than the sheet of paper you printed your stickers on, as it’s easier to use. So if you printed your stickers on an 8.5″ x 11″ piece of paper, look for a 9″ x 12″ laminating sheet. To use the laminating sheet, simply peel it off, place the sticky side up, and lay your stickers on it. Then use a squeegee, ruler or credit card to apply pressure to the back of the sticker sheet (adhesive side) to remove any air bubbles. Then simply cut out your stickers, peel off the sticky backing and you’re ready to go, now your stickers are super durable and water resistant.
Can you print stickers with a laser printer? Certainly! Just make sure you get the right type of sticker paper for the job. Using inkjet label paper on a laser can melt and ooze the adhesive on your laser printer and cause permanent damage.
Be sure to use inkjet sticker paper for inkjet printers and laser sticker paper for laser printers. These are not interchangeable. Inkjet sticker paper melts when you use it on a laser printer. If you want to use your laser printer to print stickers, be sure to get the laser-friendly sticker paper.
Vinyl stickers. Inkjet printable vinyl paper offers an affordable solution for creating vinyl stickers at home and is the most durable of the sticker paper options available. Vinyl stickers are great for everything from production labels, bumper stickers, laptop stickers, water bottle stickers, promotional stickers and more. Home-printed vinyl stickers can be waterproofed using laminated, clear spray paint like Krylon or Mod Podge, making them tougher outdoors than unfinished paper labels. However, they may fade faster than many professionally printed vinyl stickers due to the longevity of the ink. Most vinyl adhesive papers will give you information about their intended use as part of the product description. There are also several great tutorials online for creating your own vinyl stickers at home or in the office, but the steps are quite similar to printing on regular sticker paper.

The decals are designed for outdoor use and have a permanent adhesive. One major thing that divides the two is the transfer process that each uses. Stickers are peeled from a waxy paper backing and applied, while decals are transferred directly to surfaces (and the backing is then removed). Note: When deciding which paper to use, you should consider whether or not it is compatible with your printer. Some printers only take specific types of paper, so be sure to check your printer’s manual before spending anything.
Do you have the right printer for the job? It depends on your sticker design, but usually a 4 color inkjet printer with 1200 dpi print resolution will be more than enough. In the less likely case that your sticker design requires dynamic color ranges and requires more tonal variations, look for a printer with no less than 6 cartridges.
