In addition to eating clean, it is also important to me to have a home that is completely toxic and chemical free in order to provide a healthy living and natural environment for me and my family.
Simple Green All Purpose Cleaner Concentrate 32 Oz.
There are tons of non-toxic cleaning options, but Branch Basics is by far my favorite! You only need 1 bottle of concentrate and you can use the same concentrate to make all-purpose cleaner, bathroom cleaner, streak-free glass and mirror cleaner, and laundry soap! I have full posts and video demos on Branch basics and why I love it so much!
I no longer use dryer sheets because they contain toxic chemicals and synthetic fragrances. Instead, I use these reusable dryer balls and they work great! They make my clothes dry faster. Wool keeps clothes soft and fluffy.
It took me a while to get used to clothes not having any “smell” on the dryer sheet, but now I like it even more! They come out smelling “fresh”, not over-smelling.
I like to use baking soda as a deodorant. Especially useful when my kids have an accident and I want to keep their mattress. I would sprinkle it on top, let it sit for a day, then vacuum up!
Non Toxic Cleaning And Disinfecting Products
It has no bleach smell at all. I add it to every load of laundry I do, white or colored.
My dishes came out perfectly clean! No streaks, smudges or spots. I love that it’s plant-based and petroleum-free.
I love this vacuum! It does an excellent job of vacuuming floors (hardwood and carpet). Our house is small (only 700 square feet) and it can vacuum my entire house in under an hour. Works better than the iRobot I used to have and the kids broke it.
It has a separate attachment that you can fill with water and it will mop for you! It’s really a B or B- job mopping, but I totally agree because it’s zero effort for me. Would rather have a “good enough” job that doesn’t require me to do any work. My kids are also extra messy and spill “constantly”, so maybe it does a better job of cleaning up “regular” floor stains?

When you need to get your floors sparkling, look no further than this steam mop! I don’t even use detergent. just water. My floors are so clean! I try to do it about every 4 or 6 weeks to get a good clean of the floors. The rest of the time, I let my mopping robot do the “good enough” work for me. Sacramento, CA — Did you know that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that indoor air pollution can be two to five times more polluted than outdoors?
This is because strong disinfectant cleaners, scented air fresheners, soaps and other similar items contribute to the pollution in our homes, schools and offices
Megan Evans shares some of the alternatives she uses at home to help reduce her family’s indoor air pollution. For more information on cleaner and safer home products, check out the Environmental Working Group.
Laundry: While fresh, clean laundry smells great, most detergents use synthetic fragrances, and there’s a direct correlation between your health and the air you breathe.

Synthetic fragrances are known endocrine disruptors that can cause hormone imbalances, among other health problems. They can also suppress the immune system after long-term use.
So what you can do is look for “fragrance-free” or “no fragrance or dyes” detergents to reduce your exposure to chemicals in your laundry products.
When you think about it, the cleaners you use are with you all day, from the clothes you wear, to the sheets you sleep on and the bath towels you use. If you like scents, try adding essential oils to your fragrance-free detergent.
Branch Basics is a great brand that you can order online. You can find ECOS at Costco and Whole Foods.
Homemade Cleaners You Can Make With Ingredients From Your Pantry
Bathrooms: Bleach is one of the oldest cleaners, but it’s also one of the harshest. It can cause irritation and even burn the skin. Bleach can also affect your lungs. Studies have shown a link between respiratory problems and the use of disinfectants, so it’s not just bleach, many mainstream cleaning products contain harsh chemicals that affect lung function.
A cleaner and cheaper alternative is old vinegar and baking soda! It turns out that vinegar kills bacteria just as well as harsh cleaners, and it’s not toxic to breathe. When you use it with baking soda, it will help keep your bathtub, sink, and toilet squeaky clean!
If you’re fighting mold in your bathroom, hydrogen peroxide works better than bleach and is safer for your health.
Kitchen: Using non-toxic products in the kitchen is especially important as it relates to the food we eat. If you want to eat cleaner and organic food, the toxic chemicals around may counteract that.
Non Toxic Cleaning Products
I also like using vinegar in the kitchen because we can actually consume it. Kitchen and household cleaners are easy to make using white vinegar and essential oils.
If you’re willing to buy, Aunt Fannie’s is a brand that only uses vinegar and essential oils. This is my go-to kitchen cleaner. You can find it at Raley’s, Bed Bath & Beyond, Nugget Market, and Whole Foods.
Garden: With so many chemicals already in our environment, gardening with cleaning products is one more step you can take for your home and the environment. For a nontoxic herbicide, add vinegar and two teaspoons of dish soap to a sprayer. Looking to switch to natural cleaning products for your home? This list of the best non-toxic cleaning products, along with what to look for and what to avoid in cleaning products, is just what you need.
Here’s a confession that surprises no one: I’m a complete neat freak. In fact, I should say “clean freak” because I’m more likely to spend an hour scrubbing floors than folding laundry or organizing closets. We all know I love clean things…I owe this habit 100% to my mom who is meticulous about cleaning (she is famous for her baking soda tricks!).

Now let me be clear: there is no such thing as a spotless home. I do my best to keep everything tidy, but I am human and so is life, so having a perfectly clean home will never be my priority, nor does it need to be.
But I do feel genuinely happier and more at home in a clean home, so that’s something I stick to. Given my love for natural beauty, I also naturally choose to use natural cleaning products at home. So I thought I’d use this article to explain why I use natural cleaning products, my cleaning schedule, and the best natural cleaning products I’ve found on the market.
If you want to see products currently being used to clean your home, go to the Environmental Working Group website and search for these! They will rank each product on a scale of A-F, where F=fail. The EWG considers the impact of harsh chemicals on our respiratory system, skin irritation, developmental and reproductive toxicity, cancer concerns, and environmental impact. It’s amazing to look at popular cleaning products.
Non-toxic cleaning products are not only better for your health, but also better for the environment. Flushing toxic chemicals down the drain pollutes our waterways, and the ingredients in many traditional cleaning products are toxic, harmful, non-biodegradable, and non-renewable resources like petroleum that can adversely affect our ecosystem.

1. Phthalates: Commonly found in many scented household products, such as air fresheners, dish soap, and even toilet paper. Thanks to proprietary laws, companies don’t have to disclose what’s in their scents, so you won’t find phthalates on labels. If you see the word “fragrance” on a label, chances are phthalates are present. That’s a big deal — especially for women with hormonal imbalances or any reproductive issues.
