Cancun’s Hotel Zone, also known as the Zona Hotelera, is home to all-inclusive resorts, large international hotels, great restaurants, and white sand beaches. This is where most tourists to Cancun choose to stay.
The area itself is 22.5 kilometers (14 mi) long and is not to be confused with Downtown Cancun (aka Cancun Centro), which is a more traditional Mexico City and where most locals live and socialize. Cancun’s hotel district is a 20-minute drive from Cancun Centro, and there are numerous buses on this route. In fact, a bus runs this route every 5 minutes, 24 hours a day.
Would you believe that there are over 70 hotels in Cancun’s Hotel Zone? Most of these hotels are luxury all-inclusive hotels, which are usually quite expensive. As a result, the area attracts travelers looking for a luxury holiday, with couples and families particularly fond of the area. I must mention that if you are a budget traveler, the Cancun Centro area is better for you!

The great thing about Cancun’s Hotel Zone is that it offers tourists a safe place to relax and socialize. And most people here speak English. In addition, the hotel zone has many attractions, including ancient Mayan ruins and beautiful wide beaches.

Those visiting the area should try to spend at least a week here. So you can relax, unwind and explore!

As mentioned earlier, the bus system in Cancun’s hotel zone is excellent, buses run 24 hours a day to Cancun Centro, stopping at various times along the way so you can of course hop on wherever you want on the route.
Most hotels in Cancun’s Hotel Zone have a bus stop in front of them and the bus stop is clearly marked with a sign. The most frequent bus lines are R1 and R2, but there are also less regular lines R15 and R27.
The R1 will take you downtown Cancun or the bus station. I should also mention Bus One, which is a white bus that only runs the length of Cancun’s hotel zone. It’s perfect for checking out blogging without taking a cab.
A one-way ticket costs just 10 pesos (50 cents), which is really great value. The buses are modern but do not have air conditioning (the exception is Bus One). Buses are considered safe in Cancun too and I ride them all the time.
Cancun Best Hotels, Mexico: Avoid Tourist Traps
Alternatively, taxis are readily available in Cancun – your hotel can call you, you can hail one on the street, or you can use Whatsapp (which seems to be the most popular method). You will also notice numerous taxi stands in the hotel zone and downtown Cancun. Taxis can be expensive, so it’s best to negotiate the price before getting on.
A cheaper alternative to taxis is Uber, which is available in Cancun through the Uber app. However, I must mention that there is some controversy surrounding Uber in Cancun. Local taxi drivers have struggled to get rid of Uber since 2016, so getting an Uber here can be difficult.
For example, your Uber driver probably won’t be able to stop in front of your hotel or at the bus station. Instead, they will pick you up around the corner or they may come to your hotel to meet you and escort you to your car. They may also ask one passenger to sit in the front seat to disguise themselves.
You may already know that Cancun’s hotel district is one of the best party spots in the world, especially in February and March when thousands of Spring Breakers descend on the city! The hottest night spot in Cancun is Coco Bongo.
This Iconic European Hotel Brand Now Has A Beachfront Hotel In Cancun, Mexico
This popular club offers live music, acrobats and a party atmosphere that will keep you dancing the night away! In fact, Coco Bongo changes their shows regularly, so even though I’ve been several times, I visit every year!
Coco Bongo is insanely popular and the queues can be quite long, so be sure to get there early and book your tickets in advance. If you don’t like waiting in line, you can buy a gold membership card, which gives you VIP access and 15 free drinks. I think it’s great value for money as it includes pick up and drop off from your hotel.
Coco Bongo is open every day from 20:00 to 03:00. Admission starts at $150 per person for the most basic admission. Guests must be at least 18 years old to enter the club.
One of the first things every tourist does in Cancun’s hotel zone is go to the beach! That’s because there are many beautiful beaches within easy reach of your hotel – most within walking distance and some just a short bus ride away!
Review: A Luxury Stay At Leblanc Resort Cancun
Playa Tortuga is one of the funnest beaches in Cancun’s hotel district, and the parties here are serious—think loud music and crowds. It is a safe swimming beach as the water is calm and you can also try snorkelling and diving here which I recommend as the water is so clear!
There are several food vendors and restaurants on the beach. It is important to note that most places do not accept credit cards, so be sure to bring cash.
Despite being in the heart of the hotel district, Playa Chacmool is described by many locals as a “hidden gem”. It’s a relaxing place to hang out during the day and has free public showers and a nice palapa.
There are no restaurants or food stalls here, so be sure to pack snacks in a beach bag!

Playa Delfinis is undoubtedly one of the most popular beaches in Mexico. Translated from Spanish, the beach means “dolphin beach” and here you can actually see dolphins splashing in the water.
This beach is huge and you will find the famous Cancun sign on it. There are plenty of shades (palapas) on the beach to protect you from the sun, and although the waves can be strong, there is a lifeguard on duty.
Playa Gaviota Azulis is located in the middle of the hotel zone and, as you can imagine, is very popular. The entrance to this beach is next to the Mandala Beach Club.
Here you can pay for a beach club bed or simply spread a towel on the sand – there are designated places for this. The water here is calm and shallow and safe for swimming. Be sure to check out the Cubos beach area, which is an artificial sea barrier made of giant concrete blocks.
