Prepping Log Home For Stain – What preparation process do you recommend for repainting a previously stained wooden house before applying a new coat of stain? Is power washing enough?
It can be applied within seven days of the first application on the data sheet. Otherwise, the product will remain on top and will never be “dry”.

The data sheet may also state that only one coating is required due to the composition of the product. Over-filming can result in a glossy/pointy finish. Most pickling products are designed to penetrate the wood, not just the top.
Steps To Refinishing Your Log Home
Test the absorbency of the finish by spraying the surface with water. If water gets in, it’s most likely covered. If water is leaking or seeping in, my suggestion is to remove the existing cover.
Note that any surface preparation other than complete removal of the old coating may compromise the life of the new system.

I’ve seen some ugly looking log structures converted with little effort and I know it can be done. The recovery process consists of four main elements:
All four steps are important, but surface preparation is the most involved, most important, and most often overlooked. Logs must be clean, exposed and dry; Otherwise, you’ll have to do it all over again because the new ending doesn’t register or track.
Surface preparation and coating. Four situations dictate when to cover: when there is some kind of foil or coating on the wood, when old finishes have accumulated, when there is a part of the house where the old finishes are peeling or crumbling, and when there is a bright finish at home. However, if the house has had finishes applied, has never had anything applied, or if mild weather has chipped away at the finish, you can skip the stripping process and use pressure instead.
Log Cabin Restoration Tips
Bleach and water with a little soap have long been recommended for cleaning dirty wood. It works well, fast and cheap. However, there are some drawbacks. First, bleach can destroy the cellulose in wood if left on the surface for too long. Second, bleach inhibits the wood’s ability to retain its finish. Third, although the wood will be noticeably cleaner, it often looks gray or unnaturally washed out. Fourth, homemade bleach solutions are difficult to completely wash off wood.
Household bleach only stays active for 15 minutes when mixed with water, so use it as soon as possible. Also, when spraying whitewash on a wall, start from the bottom and work your way up. This will reduce streaks that are difficult to remove.
Prepared cleaning solutions. When you buy a ready-made wood solution, look for the active ingredient sodium percarbonate, sodium hypochlorite, or calcium hypochlorite. It’s all bleach. However, many store-bought products contain buffers to reduce wood damage and surfactants to help wet the wood faster and allow for easier washing.
If the wood is just painted and doesn’t have large areas of mold, look for wood cleaners that contain oxalic acid. This mild acid restores most of the wood’s original color. Oxalic acid based wood cleaners will also remove gray stains, metal or nail stains, and water stains.
Maintaining Defy Stains
Pressure washing. Pressure washing is the most effective way to wash away wood remover or cleaner. However, you must be very careful when using a pressure washer or you will damage the logs and possibly force water through the logs into the home.
To keep. The best protectors of domestic logs are burettes. It is less toxic to humans than table salt and poisons wood as food for all wood-destroying organisms, including decay fungi, bees, and termites. However, wood needs some moisture to allow for proper diffusion, so you must apply and maintain a waterproof finish on borax-treated wood to prevent the borax from leaching out. Given these few limitations, boats are very cheaply insured against many problems.
Wooden finish. There are several hundred types of wood that are believed to improve organic growth, absorb water and protect against UV rays. The common denominator is solid content. Solids can be defined as the active ingredients or what remains in the wood after the finish has dried: resins, binders, paints, fungicides, etc. A high-quality wood finish will contain at least 30 percent solids and preferably more than that. 60 percent. A high-quality finish will look good and preserve the wood for four to five years between coats.
Sealants. The last thing you need to do is seal off areas that let air and water in. The most obvious places will be where water flows during the cleaning process. Other areas where leaks often occur are in corners, around doors and windows, and on top of walls. All of these need to be sealed from the outside, not the inside, properly using a high quality sealant or holes.
Stain And Sealing
As a result, if you have just bought a few-year-old log house, then the renovation only needs to be done once. Wood can last forever with proper care and regular maintenance. Caring for the wood you own is an investment, not an expense. And that’s smart money.
