The first step for me is not to go straight downstairs, but to look carefully at everything inside and outside the house. This step is critical for those looking to seal their basement walls.

You need to decide if you need to add gutters to your home, install proper drainage measures, or complete an exterior repair to prevent water from entering your home.
For this project I will be using Flex Shot and Flex Seal Liquid MAX. Both of these products work well to provide good waterproofing. Below is a step-by-step guide on how I use Flex Seal products on basement walls.

Clean the bottom walls first to ensure a suitable surface for Flex Seal products to adhere to. Use a wire brush to remove paint and dirt. Wear a face mask when using a wire brush to avoid breathing in dust particles.
If your brick walls show signs of efflorescence (crystalline salt deposits that can form when water gets in or on roofs), you can use efflorescence remover clean those areas. Mix the remover with water according to the instructions and apply with a stiff brush. After application, wash the area with water several times.
Clean any dirt, grime or paint dust removed from your walls and install a dehumidifier and/or fan to aid in the drying process. Allow walls to dry completely before applying Flex Seal product.
Before you begin, read the instructions carefully and set up a fan to circulate fresh air into your work area for proper ventilation.

Start by applying Flex Shot to all the cracks, joints and holes in the box. Flex Shot can be applied directly from the pipe by pressing the nozzle – no caulking gun required.
Flexpert Tip: Put on a removable glove and drop the Flex Shot into the sealed opening with your finger. This will ensure that the product completely fills all the gaps and provides a complete seal.
After all holes, cracks and joints in your concrete walls have been sealed with Flex Shot, allow the product to dry for 24 hours.
When Flex Shot gets tough, it’s time for Flex Seal Liquid MAX. This is similar to Flex Seal Liquid, only in a larger 2.5 gallon size, perfect for larger projects. Flex Seal Liquid is thicker than paint and dries to a strong, durable coating. It can help seal in air, water and moisture and is chemical and corrosion resistant – making it an excellent choice for your basement walls.

You may want to place a drop cloth or fish skin on your floor to avoid spilling the product where you don’t want it.
It’s time to take it to the MAX! Open the Flex Seal Liquid MAX container and mix the contents before use.
For easy application, you can transfer some of the Flex Seal Liquid MAX to a small container.
Using a small paint brush, start applying the product to your lower walls – focusing on the corners and sides before moving on to using the roller.
Basement Waterproofing Costs
Be sure to apply your Flex Seal Liquid MAX into all edges, holes and joints for complete coverage on all surfaces. Applying the product gently ensures adequate coverage.
After you’ve painted the corners and edges with the brush, it’s time to set up the paint roller. The size of the roller you use depends on the surface of your walls. For normal, rough surfaces, use a 3/4″ screw. For rougher surfaces, choose a 1″ screw. -¼”.
