What Do You Need To Make T Shirts At Home – Learn how to make an easy t-shirt with the Cricut! This is a great project for beginners and I show you how to do it step by step.
One of the reasons many people buy a Cricut is so they can make t-shirts! And it’s easy to see why—the Cricut is perfect for making t-shirts because it irons vinyl designs like a champ. My Print Then Cut Iron on Transfer T-Shirt tutorial is a huge hit and my mandala heart t-shirt is also a huge crowd pleaser! This can be a bit challenging for beginners. So I want to pull it back a bit and make a very simple tutorial on how to make a t-shirt with a Cricut for you!
What Do You Need To Make T Shirts At Home
A few months ago I did a tutorial on printing and then ironing a colored t-shirt, which was a big hit, but printing and cutting can be a bit challenging for beginners. So I want to back it up a bit and do a very easy tutorial on how to make a t-shirt with the Cricut with you!

For this project we will be working with iron on vinyl, also known as heat transfer vinyl or HTV. Iron on vinyl is a special type of vinyl that has a heat-sensitive adhesive that will bond to fabric and other surfaces when pressed with a heat source such as an iron or EasyPress. I’ll show you how to use BOTH in this video.
Now the cool thing about the Cricut is that you can cut a design or name out of iron-on vinyl in a variety of colors, patterns, and textures to create a uniquely personalized design. And if you do it right, your shirt can be washed in the machine up to 50 times before you start having problems. I’ll show you the RIGHT way to do it in this video so you get great results the first time!
Because the thing is, there are a ton of things that can go wrong when you make a shirt for the first time. You have to remember to mirror or VERIFY the design, put the vinyl on the cutting mat right side up, braid the right side of the design, heat the t-shirt first, adjust the temperature, press long enough and remove the carrier sheet at the right time. The good news is that I’ll be right here with you as you make your shirt to make sure you get it right!

In the Cricut Design Space, you will find many designs for iron-on t-shirts. Click on Images and browse the image library for ideas. If you’re a beginner, I recommend sticking to simple, monochrome designs that don’t have a lot of little details.
If you want to use my free Craft Heart design that I used in this tutorial (Design #151), you can download the free SVG cut files from my free resource library. It is also available as PDF (for hand cutting) and SVG/DXF (for machine cutting). If you are going to cut it on your cutting machine, upload the file to your design software. If you’re not sure how to upload an SVG cut file to Cricut Design Space, check out this helpful video tutorial series I created.
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you’re not sure how to upload an SVG file to Cricut Design Space, or you’re having trouble (like getting an “unsupported file” message), check out my free tutorial series, SVGs Made Simple . It will help you so much!
You can resize the image to fit the shirt using the resize handle in the lower right corner — just click and drag.
How To Design T Shirts For Small Business
When you’re ready, click the green Make It button in the upper right corner. Next, you must turn on MIRROR (green) — all iron-on designs must be before cutting!
It is extremely important that you place your iron-on vinyl SHINY SIDE DOWN on your cutting mat. Learn how to tell which side to cut vinyl on iron in my tutorial here!
Now it’s time to iron out our design. So weeding means removing all the vinyl that we don’t want to transfer to our project when we iron it or use a heat press. This means we remove all the extra small pieces.
To get started, you want to start peeling the vinyl from the edge. Alas, vinyl never wants to come off easily. So what I do is I make a small nick in the corner with my craft knife. You don’t want to cut all the way through. Just cut the iron layer on the vinyl on the matte side (cut side). And then it’s easier to peel after you make that cut, I find. So, I just got cornered right here:

And now I can get my nail under the edge of the vinyl more easily because of that little bump. If you have any problems, you can use the weed remover to sort of pull it back like this. Once you get it going, just keep pulling it away from the carrier sheet. And your design will stay on the support and the part you don’t want will be pulled away, just like this.
Now, if you look at your iron-on design, you’ll see that not everything has been removed, right? So we have the parts inside the heart and the wings as well as the letters.
Tip: Always keep your small pieces off to the side, away from your work area so they don’t get mixed up with other things.
Just be patient and if you need to, you can use tweezers to remove the small pieces without damaging the letters. This is where we entangled our entire design.
How To Make Custom Shirts + Easy Cricut Joy & Easypress2 Tutorial
First, if you’re using the Cricut EasyPress, check out the Cricut EasyPress Interactive Quick Reference Guide, which will tell you how to prepare your material and EasyPress, how to apply, and how to care for the finished product. This takes the guesswork out of the process. You can view the guide at /easypress.
If you are using an iron, you will want to preheat the iron to the cotton setting or the appropriate setting for your material.
Place your design on the shirt. For this project we want to center it on the front. To find the center of the shirt, fold it in half by matching the sleeves. Using the EasyPress or an iron, put a little crease on the flap. Now, when you open the shirt, you know exactly where the center is because there is a crease. Just line up the center of the heart with the crease. I also decided to put the design in the top half of the shirt.
If your transfer sheet sticks to your iron, you can cover your design with parchment paper to protect the surface of the iron.

For this project, my design was larger than my EasyPress. So I had to move my EasyPress to heat up the design in two parts.
According to the EasyPress Heat Guide, I had to turn the shirt over and press the back.
Wait and let the design cool down to a warm temperature. Then pull the carrier sheet off your design.
Be sure to check the Cricut website for instructions on submitting your material. For Everyday Iron-On, see the settings here.
How To Design A T Shirt
To learn how to care for your new shirt, wait 24 hours after applying the vinyl before washing. Turn the shirt inside out before washing without bleach. This design should have at least 50 washes.
Q: Why does my vinyl design peel off my shirt when I try to peel off the carrier sheet?
A: This can happen for a few different reasons. First, it might be too soon to pull it, and you’ll want to let the design cool down a bit more, then try again. If that still doesn’t work, warm up the design some more. There are usually two reasons why it doesn’t work.
Q: I’ve heard that I should be able to see the texture/fiber of my shirts through an iron on vinyl; is this correct?
