Awesome Donut Recipes To Make Breakfast A Little Sweeter

Personally, I believe everyone should have a few basic recipes, which is why I started my Baking Basics series. This baked donuts recipe is the perfect addition to the series because it’s a delicious no-fuss recipe, but still gives you plenty of creative license with how you flavor and decorate them.

Don’t worry though, if being creative with topping your donuts isn’t your forte, I’m also sharing three different ways you can decorate your donuts: sugar donuts, sprinkles, and glazed. Keep reading for all my top tips, too!

This donut recipe uses simple ingredients you probably already have at home. It doesn’t take long for the mixture to come together, so you can be enjoying some deliciously baked donuts in record time!

Step 1: Grease your donut pan with some melted butter and set it aside. While making the donut mix, preheat your oven to 180C/350F.

Step 2: Sift flour, baking powder, soda bicarbonate and salt in a large bowl. Add brown sugar. Whisk them all lightly to combine, then set aside.

Step 3: In a separate bowl, or ideally a jug, add the milk, egg, and vanilla and whisk together. Slowly add 4 tablespoons of melted butter, stirring so that your butter doesn’t solidify when it comes in contact with the cold ingredients in the jug. Pour your wet ingredients into a bowl with your dry ingredients and whisk together until thoroughly mixed.

Step 4: Pour your donut batter into a piping bag and fill your donut pan no more than ⅔ full. This is important because if you over-fill it, your donut will rise and collapse during baking, so it will no longer be a ring shape. Bake in your preheated oven for 9-10 minutes, until a skewer comes out clean and your donuts are springy to the touch. Cool in the pan for a few minutes, then carefully loosen and transfer to a wire rack to cool while you prepare your topping.

Step 5: For the Sugared Donuts, spread some melted butter on your cold donuts (you can do one side or all over) and add granulated sugar until completely coated.

Step 6: To make your glaze, add 2 tablespoons of milk to your icing sugar and mix to make a thick glaze, adding more milk until you get the consistency you want. I like the consistency of extra heavy cream in my glazes so I get a nice coating on my donuts, but you can add more milk if you prefer a thinner glaze.

Step 7: To sprinkle donuts, dip your donuts in the glaze, allowing it to drip back into the bowl before it sets. You can then drizzle the sprinkles over your glaze or submerge your donut completely, glaze side down, in a bowl of sprinkles. Leave on your cooling rack to set.

Step 8: If you want to make multiple colors of glaze, divide your white glaze into as many bowls as you want. Here, I divided mine into two, painting one purple and leaving the other white. Dip your donuts in a glaze as before, let drip a little, then place on your cooling rack. Leave the glaze to set for a few minutes until a light layer forms. Using a different color, sprinkle a pattern on top of the donut. It should not blend but rather sit nicely on top of your original color due to the layering. Leave to set.

Once you take your donut pan out of the oven, place it on your cooling rack for 2-3 minutes. Then, very gently, use a (round) knife to gently ease the donuts to make sure they come loose from the pan. If you’ve greased your pan before baking, they’ll slide out easier. How long do these donuts last and how do I store baked doughnuts?

These donuts will keep for 2-3 days if kept in a cool place and airtight container. However, they are best enjoyed on the day they are made. Can you freeze donuts?

Absolutely! For best results, freeze your donuts just before glazing or decorating, and freeze for up to two months. Keep reading for how to freeze your own donuts.

I would suggest not decorating your donuts before freezing them, but after defrosting them. I use a large (sealable) food or freezer bag to freeze my food. Cut two pieces of parchment slightly smaller than your bag, then tuck one into the bottom of your bag. Place your donuts on the paper in a single layer and place another piece of paper on top. Gently squeeze out as much air as possible from the bag and seal it almost completely. Using a straw, carefully insert it into the unsealed part of your bag and use it to force any remaining air out of the bag. This will make it look like it is shrinking and the paper will shrink in front of the donuts. That’s exactly what it should be. Once you get as much air out as you can, seal the bag and put it in your freezer. how to melt your donuts

When you want to enjoy your frozen donuts again, simply thaw them in the fridge overnight, then take them out of the fridge to bring them to room temperature about 30 minutes before decorating. If you’re short on time (or you forget to pop them in
