Can Vinyl Plank Flooring Be Installed Over Tile – Today I’m going to share how we installed new vinyl flooring over our existing tile floor in a few easy steps to ensure the proper level. We used Golden Select Vinyl Plank in Smokey Barrel.

When things suddenly and dramatically changed this spring with the pandemic and our spring break was canceled, we decided to look for and tackle some home projects. We didn’t decide to replace all the tiles in our basement because it seemed like a big deal since the ceramic tiles were installed directly under the concrete floor. But we also knew we really wanted to change and freshen up the look of the basement, as well as create more consistent flooring choices throughout the space. The old tile was not smooth, it was difficult to clean, the feet were hard and it was cold in winter. It was also not our preferred style or color.

In January I painted all the walls white and we added a wall of wallpaper. I also bought some area rugs to cover the solid tile and warm up the space, which definitely worked well as a temporary measure.

But when we decided to redo the family room, updating the ceiling, flooring and trim, the project kind of snowballed, taking in all the common areas and basement hallways.

Before everything really blew up pandemic-wise, we went to Costco and bought enough boxes of Golden Select Vinyl Plank flooring (in Smokey Barrel) to cover the entire basement floor except for three bedrooms, where the carpet was in good shape (and) to solve which keeps things warmer in winter). We could also order Golden Select online from Costco, but were anxious to get started!

Before we started, we removed the wallboards and made sure to clean your floors thoroughly.

I bought this awesome patch compound at my local hardware store and mixed it according to the package directions. Since our tile had a faux slate look to it, we wanted to smooth it out before installing the vinyl on top.

Laminate Vs. Vinyl Flooring: How To Choose

I used a wide putty knife to apply the mixture to the grout joints and any areas that were low, making sure to spread it evenly and scrape off any excess product.

Since we had already installed vinyl planks in the family room, we lined up the floorboards with that door to continue the line. We put it first and go back through the front door of the family home to determine what the width of our first piece should be.

You can see below with the door open in the top left of the picture how we lined up the boards so they were in a straight line and flowed down the hallway to the basement family room. We later used a transition strip because the two rooms were slightly different heights, but we still wanted the boards to be straight between the two rooms.

The installation went much faster than we expected, considering that we had to make a few small cuts.

We ran into some spots that weren’t smooth, so it was important to patch the floor with patching compound to make sure the vinyl plank was installed over a smooth surface. We had to do this as the floor stopped before entering the furnace/mechanical room in the basement.

We were very pleased with how easy it was to install this vinyl plank flooring (read more details and installation tips in this article).

You can also watch the video I made with our tips – the process by making sure your floor is completely flat (and tacking if necessary) while going directly over the old tile floor!

No matter how much white paint I used on the walls and how much I cleaned the floor before, it always felt dirty and old. Having a smooth, easy-to-clean, beautiful tile floor underneath completely transformed the basement area!

What’s The Average Cost To Install Vinyl Plank Flooring?

We shared in this article how we installed this flooring directly over the concrete floor in our family room.

You can find Golden Select at Costco and it comes in several beautiful color options. We love the Smokey Barrel color, but I really wanted to use Antique Oak in my new build!

Vinyl flooring can be installed over most types of flooring, including pre-existing hardwoods. Of course, this is not always a simple process. When you are installing vinyl flooring, it is important to have a smooth and seamless surface, more importantly a smooth and even floor.

This means that you will need to replace or repair certain areas of the wood that are particularly uneven or damaged. It may take some work, but it’s totally possible. Here are the steps you need to follow to install vinyl flooring over wood.

How To Install A Herringbone Lvp Floating Floor Over Tile

Before you begin, you should take these steps to ensure a smooth installation. Preparation and planning are critical to successful flooring projects. If you are installing over existing wood floors, make sure they are firmly attached and not creaking. Any and all sub-floors must be properly sealed prior to installation.

There are several options for vinyl flooring. The two easiest to install are the skin and stick and click lock.

Peel and stick tiles are relatively easy to install, but you need to be sure where you place them as they bond instantly. Therefore, it is very important to plan your design in advance.

Another option is click lock. Some types of click locks are actually called “floating plates” because they are designed to float on top of other floors. These boards click together by tongue and groove and you use a rubber mallet to tighten each joint. They do not require any glue. The hardest part of the installation is the one you use with a knife to match the edges and corners.

Things To Consider Before Installing Floating Floors Over Old Tile Flooring

Whether you do a peel and stick or a click lock, the installation process is very similar. The main difference is that the skin and wood are glued to the floor and the click lock is locked in place.

Keep all your tools and accessories within easy reach. You should also wear a face mask so you don’t inhale any fumes. Once you are ready to begin, remove all the boards on the walls. After removing the boards, clean the floors thoroughly. Any remaining dirt, dust, or debris can prevent the tile from properly adhering to the floor.

Pay attention to moisture content as well, as too much moisture in your soil can affect the success of your vinyl plank installation.

You’ll also want to make sure you have all your tools and supplies ready and easy to access before you begin.
