I honestly love the rich natural color of oak wood and hate to cover it with a dark stain. For this reason, I prefer stains that are transparent or at least semi-transparent.

My biggest problem with staining oak is that it’s gorgeous to begin with! I prefer a very clear stain that shows the beautiful grain of the wood.

I always prefer to apply wood stains with a lint free cloth. This allows you to control the amount of stain applied (I prefer thin layers) and there will be no brush strokes or streaks.
You should not seal painted wood. However, applying the sealant will make the underlying wood more durable and easier to clean.
If you plan to use the piece as any type of coffee table or something that will get significant touch or use, I would absolutely apply several coats of sealer over the stain.

Weathered Oak by Minwax is my favorite light stain to use on oak wood. It has a very warm tone with gray undertones.
If you compare weathered oak with just walrus oiled (pretty close to raw wood look), you can see that weathered oak slightly deepens the color of the wood and increases the contrast between the lighter and darker parts of the tree. shavings.
I love how it brings out the detail in the wood grain but keeps the natural color pretty true. I guess the fact that “oak” is in the name of the stain really says it’s a great match!
Minwax Dark Walnut is my favorite option if you want to stain oak wood a dark color. Dark Walnut is a very rich, chocolate brown color.

This is a dark stain – but if you’re looking for a deep, rich color, this is a really great option.
Even though it is dark, it is very transparent and still allows the grain of the wood to fully show through. It settles very well into the grain lines, making them very dark.

Gray wood stain gives the wood a natural old or rustic look. It is great for an aesthetic beach house, lake house or farm.

Minwax’s Classic Gray is my favorite oak gray tone stain! This is a great option if you want to take oak wood and transform it to have a cooler tone.
This stain color is what I would consider a mid-tone – neither super light nor super dark – but still sheer enough to work really well on the oak!
In some cases, I have found that this stain can go on too thick or “hazy”, so be sure to test it on your wood and wipe off any excess stain for a clean look.

It’s easy to see why this can be such a dilemma for some people, your floors will have a huge impact on the look of your home and if you get them wrong, you’ll be stuck with them for a long, long time.
The answer is not as difficult as you think. There are a number of factors that will influence whether you should stain your floors and what stain color best suits your home, all of which you should consider before making a decision.
To be clear – when we talk about “staining”, we are talking about a special step taken to stain your wood floors. This stage is done between sanding and applying the clear topcoats. Many people think that “painting” means applying top coats of oil or polyurethane. But in the flooring industry, they are called “finishing.” Multiple layers of clear finish are applied over the stain.
Other ways you can change the color of the floor is to use a colored hard wax oil such as Rubio Monocoat or Pallmann Magic Oil, or to use paint.

But if you want to change the color of your wooden floors and have a surface finish, then they will need to be painted or pre-treated. If you want to use hard wax oil then you have the option of using an oil based stain (for OSMO Polyx-Oil and Pallmann Magic Oil) or going with a pre-painted colored finish.

If you are lucky enough to have an exotic, rare or special wood floor such as mahogany, cherry, rosewood, walnut, old pine or even maple, we strongly recommend that it not be stained.
Most people stain their floors in an attempt to make them look like one of these beautiful floors. If you already have this type of beautiful natural wood flooring in your home, then you are way ahead of the game.

On the other hand, you may have a more common type of wood, such as red or white oak. Then you have to make a decision.
New finishing systems are now available, such as Pallmann Pall-X Gold or Loba Invisible (used on the floor above), which do not turn oak floors into the old yellow-orange color that people associate with their grandmothers’ floors and grandfathers.
Those floors from the 1950s and into the 2000s turned this way because an oil-based polyurethane was used. As they aged over time and with exposure to the sun, they slowly took on that amber color that we all want to avoid.
New water-based finishes have gone a long way in stopping this effect. No more 70s orange oak floors if you don’t want to stain.

But if you prefer to add a bit of color to your floors to simulate a more exotic or dramatic look, then oak floors remove stains very well with the right techniques. And they look great when done right
