I’ve been snowboarding off and on for 20 years. I consider myself an intermediate rider at best, as I’m typically only 4-5 days a year on the board. At 50, I ride mostly clippers, not a park rat, but I’m working on switches and tweaking a few small features. At 6’1” and overweight at 210 pounds, I prefer a board with hard flex. I’ve always used boards with a traditional single curl, so I was a little concerned about switching to a triple curl. I also wear a 10.5 boot, so I wasn’t sure what it would be like to stay end-to-end on a mid-width board.
Any new board takes a little getting used to and it was no different with the 2023 Proto Ultra (160). By the end of the first day, I felt comfortable, and considering I also had brand new boots and bindings (Burton Step On), that’s saying something. After spending 10 days on the board I can say that I am very happy with the board. The triple curl looks very close to a traditional single curl, but is more forgiving if you stand to one side. It seems like a very stable speed. I reached a new top speed of 36 mph on this board. Not bad for a fat old man. Getting end to end? No problem looks very natural. Lastly, the top sheet is very grippy. I no longer need a stepping pad.
This sign is phenomenal at carving! I went from a flat-pop rocker snowboard to this crazy three-bend profile board. It’s a game changer!

I bought the FR proto and it was a little stiff for my riding style (mainly pow, trees and jib). I contacted the factory boys and they were totally cool with me coming in and demoing some boards to find the right fit. Which is unheard of in the world of snowboarding. After riding the Ultra, I knew it was love within about two laps. This damn board rules!! It’s the shortest board I’ve ridden in the 25 years since I started riding, and it maintains speed with no worries. It’s also a little wider so it rips in pow even with the length (just finished two days on the boat where I was balls deep in spots). The Ultra is basically the quiver killer and the best mountain twin I’ve ever ridden. Keep up the great work NS!
The Never Summer Proto Ultra with triple camber rules. The Proto Ultra grips the snow like Velcro and its high-speed stability is second to none. It is amazing powder and always stays afloat. I take Proto Ultra for any and all conditions, getting rid of goofs or trade-offs. I love that Never Summer did a high end double edge that takes me from powder to park!
