Every year, designers descend on the small town of High Point, North Carolina for the biannual High Point Market, a “must-see home furnishings event.” At the same time, those outside the industry are patiently waiting for the market to reveal the next trends and new collections. Last year, the world’s largest home furnishings trade show was postponed and canceled for the first time since World War II due to the coronavirus pandemic. This created an opportunity for some change, according to a group of industry experts and friends.

During a series of Saturday morning meetings, these experts (passionate about the community, its rich history of furniture making and its ever-present ingenuity) made it their mission to create a year-round space. for design and creativity, all open. Enter: High Point X Design (HPxD).

Now, the showrooms welcome everyone to experience the long history of furniture making and the power that exists in High Point. During the market days, which take place over a five-day period twice a year, High Point celebrates American-made design and welcomes approximately 200,000 event-goers and approximately 2,000 exhibitors. HPxD supports this long tradition, which is celebrated by building a community as a place for the remaining 355 days of each year. The market then becomes the jewel in the crown of a stronger society. HPxD was created to create a year-round destination in downtown High Point, and this begins with the opening of commercial and public showrooms outside of market hours. In partnership with the High Point Showroom Association, HPxD anticipates the opening of approximately fifty showrooms. Discovering world-renowned and up-and-coming artists is no longer limited to business professionals who attend the annual event. Now, the average design lover can find things for themselves.

Thayer Coggin was founded in 1953 and remains a family-owned and operated retail manufacturer of home furnishings. Under the leadership of President Royale Wiggin, the company focuses on original equipment design and sustainable construction. Their 200,000-square-foot showroom, offices and workshop are located moments from downtown, where it has been located in the same location on South Road since the early 1960s. “Having grown up in the family business, I inherited my passion for property design and construction from my parents, Dot and Thayer Coggin,” Royale says. “Creating high-quality and classic designs with our family of artisans is my joy. As a team leader, I’m excited to support and build on Thayer Coggin’s legacy.”

He continues, “We’re excited to show guests the experience, expertise, smiles and enthusiasm of the professionals who make Thayer Coggin products with time-honored skills.”

High Point: The Tiny North Carolina Town That Makes Most Of America’s Furniture

Amanda Branch Covington recently launched Branch Home Designs, a new lifestyle brand with modern ideas and takes on new finishes and shapes, along with Amit Kochhar. This year marks the company’s first anniversary, featuring lighting, mirrors, furniture, beds and accessories with several tables, unique new marble designs and wide range of tiles. “I believe that HPxD is the future of growing the furniture world in High Point,” says Amanda, who has lived in the area for 20 years. “Department Home enjoys listening to our customers, and being able welcoming our designers and vendors throughout the year is rewarding.”

Stephanie Schofield began selling vintage pieces a decade ago, and in 2013 opened 214 Modern Vintage in High Point. Described as a “meeting place for like-minded vintage and vintage dealers,” 214 Modern Vintage features eight dealers focusing on modern design from the mid-20th century. Stephanie explains: “Our art collection, in particular, seems to attract our customers; We truly have the largest selection of antique art in North Carolina, especially during the Market, when we are filled with the best.”

Stephanie knows nothing about the surprise of residents and visitors that this city has more than just goods, and she is happy to be a part of their discovery that there is a rich depth to the design and offerings of High Point. He tells us that, “I was very encouraged by the number of locals who came and showed that they were happy to see something ‘different.'”

When asked what excites her most about HPxD, founder and owner of 214 Modern Vintage Stephanie Schofield says, “I’m really interested in what I call the ‘performance’ of High Point. The train is rolling. slowly but surely, and I’m looking forward to seeing what this area will look like in five to 10 years. There are so many opportunities here. Red egg is a furniture company with a mission to create heirloom furniture that brings joy; Carol Gregg is the founder, owner and chief chicken. On a trip to Asia, Carol was inspired when she came across a street full of vintage shops in Hong Kong. He opened a showroom in San Fransico and began designing and selling rattan furniture from the Philippines. He moved to High Point in 2004, and moved his company with the goal of making wood products locally. Nearly a decade later, the Red Egg showroom and office are located in a historic High Point home, and he describes the space as a “living room.” Indoor furniture displays give customers a unique experience and allow Red Egg to share their brand vision.

When asked what excites her most about HPxD, Red Egg founder Carol Gregg said, “I’m excited to be a part of a growing design community! If we can continue to connect with companies that other like-minded people and join together, we will give people a reason to be excited about coming to High Point to include the twice-yearly Market. Sabine Verellen opened Verellen’s doors with her husband Tom in the late 1990s, shortly after they moved to the states. “After a short time in the textile industry on the import/export side, we saw an opportunity in the furniture market and thought we might find our place in the group of upholstery,” Sabine explains. “Both of us were born in Antwerp, Belgium, allowing us a strong knowledge and appreciation for fine textiles, especially Belgian textiles, which is where we were inspired by thinking about Verellen in the early days.”

Today, every piece of Verellen is lovingly crafted in North Carolina. Entering an industry built on decades of experience and trust, the Verellens felt like the new kids on the block.
