What is a highboy? The boy’s tall chest is a tall chest of drawers with a foot base. It can also be called a tall man or chest-on-stand.
Built in 1999, the impressive eighty-five foot tall by forty foot wide dresser forms the front of Furnitureland South (which bills itself as the largest furniture store in the world) in Jamestown, North Carolina. is the world’s largest replica of an 18th century Highboy chest. The giant chest of drawers was built when the store expanded, opening a 420,000 square foot showroom called “The Mart.”
The world’s largest highboy dresser was designed by High Point furniture designer Sid Lenger. It was then traced and carved into the foam where a team from Central Carolina Interiors carved the design.

Every year, design professionals descend on the small town of High Point, North Carolina for the biannual High Point Market, the “must-see home furnishings event.” At the same time, those outside the industry patiently await the post-market revelation of future trends and new collections. Last year, the largest home furnishings trade show was postponed and then canceled for the first time since World War II due to the coronavirus pandemic. This creates an opportunity for some change in distribution, according to a group of industry professionals and friends.
During a series of casual meetings on Saturday mornings, these professionals (who are passionate about the community, its rich history of furniture making and its endless ingenuity) have made it their mission to create the entire annual destination for design and creativity, open to all. Enter: High Point X Design (HPxD).

HPxD supports this long-standing, celebrated tradition by building the community as a destination for the remaining 355 days each year. The market then becomes the jewel in the crown of the stronger community. In partnership with the High Point Showroom Association, HPxD expects to open nearly five dozen showrooms. Discovering world-renowned and up-and-coming creators is no longer limited to trade professionals attending the annual event. Today, the average design lover can make discoveries for themselves.
