You should always consult your owner’s manual first, if available, as it details the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule. Remember that different vehicles have different timetables, so always refer to the correct one for your vehicle. However, if you don’t currently have an owner’s manual or maybe it’s a used vehicle that doesn’t have a virtual manual, there are still ways to measure.
How Often Get Tires Rotated
A common rule of thumb seems to be to schedule a tire rotation within a window of every 3,000-5,000 miles. However, some experts recommend rotating your tires at the same time as changing the oil. If you have access to the owner’s manual, you’ll find that this usually happens once every six months or 5,000 miles.

Talk to Kevin Haynes, Senior Technician at McLaren Philadelphia, to learn how often to rotate your tires. Haynes is the only factory-certified McLaren F1 technician in North America, which means his day job revolves around working on $20 million exotics. If anyone understands how tire rotations work, it’s him.
How Often Should You Rotate Your Tires?
Not all cars can rotate the tires. If your wheels are studded, with tires of different sizes front to back, you will not be able to perform a tire rotation. You can only rotate your tires if all four are the same size.
To find out if your tires can be rotated, refer to your owner’s manual or simply look at the tires and compare front to back measurements.
Hines will be the first to tell you to consult your owner’s manual for exact intervals at which to rotate your tires. Your manufacturer will know exactly how many miles between rotations you need to drive, and the exact pattern of your tires that will need to be rotated. Before reading further, we suggest doing this first.
As for Haynes’ personal tire rotation schedule: For his daily driver pickup, he rotates his tires at every other oil change, which comes out about every 15,000 miles. Planning tire rotations around oil changes makes it easier to do both tasks at the same time while the car is in service.
How And Why You Must Rotate Your Tires
Exactly how you should rotate your tires will be clearly outlined in your owner’s manual. Some manufacturers call for changing the tires on the front and rear axle, without changes from left to right. Other car manufacturers suggest taking the left rear tire and mounting it on the right front, mounting the right rear tire on the left front, and bringing both front tires to the rear without switching sides.
“There are a bunch of different schools of thought,” Haynes says. “The old people who brought me will say that depending on the type of tire and how you drive, the rubber belts can wear or get used to the direction they’re going. So if you have a tire that’s happened and you take it off the left side and put it on the right side, it can make noise, create traction or [produce ] a strange feeling”.
As for Haynes’ personal car? “Most of the time I just go straight front to back,” he says. “Just rotate the axles and keep the tires and wheels on the same side of the car, moving them from front to back.”
If you go to track days often, you’re going to put more stress on your tires and make them wear out faster. You must adjust your tire rotation method and schedule to compensate for this additional wear. Even if you have a set of dedicated track day tires that only see a few hundred miles a year, you should have a specific rotation schedule to ensure you get the most life out of them.
How Often Should You Do Tire Rotation And Balance?
It’s unlikely that your car’s manufacturer will have a suggested tire rotation schedule tailored to frequent track days, so deciding how often to rotate your track car’s tires will be up to you. Hines suggests asking a local with some knowledge to get an informed opinion.
“Find someone in your track who has a lot of experience and has been doing it for a long time and ask them what they do,” he says. “Refer to an expert source for your specific application.”
It’s also a good idea to periodically check the wear patterns of your tires to gain insight into how and when to rotate them.
I drive my car at the New Jersey Motor Park, which is hard on the left side [tires],” Haynes says. “So once every two days I’ll switch them from left to right, if the wear pattern shows I need to do that. But most of the time I just leave them where they are and just go with it.”

Never drive your project car without zip ties There is a dispute about tire rotation, yes, tire rotation is necessary to keep all 4 tires on your vehicle wearing evenly, this will save you from having to buy new tires prematurely, it improves fuel economy, improves the quality of the ride and prevents tire noise, slows down the separation of roads, improves grip and gives total control of your vehicle, but when should you rotate the tires, and where should you place the best tires?
Years ago, the best tires were placed on the front; It doesn’t matter if the vehicle was front or rear wheel drive. Now tire manufacturers recommend that the best tires be placed in the rear, regardless of whether they are front or rear wheel drive, so where should the best tires be placed? front or back?
How Often Should You Rotate Car Tires & How Much Is It?
Tire manufacturers state that the best tires are located at the rear of the vehicle, so that in the event that the rear wheels lose traction, the bottom end of the vehicle will not swing to the front and cause the vehicle to spin out. I think if the rear tires lose loose grip the car will probably spin out of control, even so the tires have more tread!
I believe that any vehicle, front or rear wheel drive, should always have the best tires in the front. The front tires are the tires that will steer the vehicle, if the rear of the vehicle starts spinning sideways; I want to be in control of where the front of my vehicle goes. I prefer traction to the front tires in any situation; It means I’m in control.
At what stage should you rotate tires? Well there is no set time or mileage to rotate tires as all tires wear differently, some tires have a softer rubber compound which means they will wear faster but have better grip, another variable is everyone’s driving habits are different. Some drivers like to accelerate quickly from a stop, others like to make hard turns, and then you have people who drive easily and never push the vehicle beyond normal driving conditions. An easy way to remember when to rotate your tires is to rotate them at every oil change.
On any vehicle, the front tire rims will always wear faster than the rear tire rims
