Is Too Much Alkaline Water Bad – We all know that drinking plenty of water every day can help your body thrive and ward off disease. In fact, proper hydration is necessary for almost every bodily function. Now, however, a product called alkaline water is making waves, with proponents claiming it can balance your body’s pH, boost energy and ward off disease.
Their theory: Acidic environments promote bacterial growth, so changing your diet to be more alkaline (less acidic) will keep harmful bugs at bay. Unfortunately, that theory doesn’t hold water, as acids are frequently used to kill bacteria.

So do these functional waters have any real health benefits? Here, registered dietitian nutritionist Kelly Nohl answers frequently asked questions about America’s newest H2O trend.
Alkaline Water Benefits: Should You Swap Out Tap Water?
A: Alkaline refers to part of the pH scale. This scale is from 0-14, the lower numbers are more acidic while the higher numbers are more alkaline with 7 being neutral. Most alkaline water has a pH of 8 or 9 while pure water has a neutral pH of 7. The idea is that drinking alkaline water counteracts extra acidity in the body.
A: Not really. Most of the time, your blood maintains a pH of 7; it falls right in the middle of the pH scale. What you eat and drink only changes the pH of your urine. So when you drink alkaline water, you will change the pH of what is in your toilet bowl, not your blood. Plus, when the alkaline water you drink hits your stomach, the acids in your intestines neutralize it. So essentially you’re paying a lot of money to drink something that won’t affect your body’s acidity.
A: Pure water has a pH of 7, so like your blood it is neutral. Tap water varies in its pH, usually between 6.5-8.5. It also contains important minerals such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, bicarbonate and silica. In fact, depending on where tap water is obtained, it can provide between 1 and 20 percent of your daily calcium and magnesium needs. Hard water is more alkaline and has a higher mineral content than soft water.
A: There are some studies that suggest that drinking alkaline water inactivates pepsin, the enzyme responsible for acid reflux. But these studies were done in a petri dish, not people, so there’s really no telling how alkaline water will affect patients with acid reflux.
How Is Alkaline Water Made?
A: The human body is an amazing and complex machine. If there is an imbalance in your pH level, your body will correct it no matter what you drink. For example, if your blood becomes too acidic, you will exhale more carbon dioxide. The kidneys are also able to excrete excess acid in your urine.
A: Drinking a bottle of alkaline water every other day will not significantly affect your body. However, if you drink a liter of alkaline water daily, your body has to work hard to maintain its pH and this means that over time your body will produce more gastric juices and digestive enzymes. For people who have a kidney condition or who take medications that change their kidney function, the minerals in alkaline water can start to build up in their bodies.
If you are worried that your diet is too acidic, follow an anti-inflammatory diet and fill your plate with fruits and vegetables. In general, animal products, caffeine, salt and sugar are acid forming, while fruits, vegetables and whole grains are more alkaline.

Claims that it has various health benefits have helped increase the popularity of alkaline diets and sales of machines that make water alkaline.
The pH of water is neutral, around pH 7. Chemicals and gases can change it to make it more acidic or more alkaline.
The pH of water is around 7, but some people say it may be healthier to drink water that is alkaline.
Rainwater’s pH is slightly below neutral because there is carbon dioxide from the air, and it increases acidity.
Fda Warns Against Drinking Real Water Brand Alkaline Water
Water can be high or low in pH, but if it is too high or too low, it can have adverse effects.
Water that is too alkaline has a bitter taste. This can cause deposits that cover pipes and appliances. Water that is very acidic can corrode or even dissolve metals.
Found an effect on bone resorption. Bone resorption is the process where old bone cells are broken down and replaced by new ones.
The authors concluded that “a bicarbonate- and calcium-rich alkaline mineral water reduced bone resorption more than a calcium-rich acidic mineral water.”
Can Pregnant Women Drink Alkaline Water [new Research In 2023]
The scientists called for more research to see if the benefit of less bone resorption is long-term and can improve bone mineral density.
, compared the impact of an acidic diet, rather than alkaline water, on osteoporosis, a disease characterized by weak and brittle bones.
In reviewing the background of the study, the authors noted that a large number of claims are made on the Internet. These claims suggested “that alkaline diets and related commercial products counteract acidity, helping the body to regulate its pH and thus prevent disease processes.”
The review used high-quality evidence to conclude that acid from the modern diet does not cause osteoporosis. It also concluded that an alkaline diet or alkaline supplements or salts do not prevent osteoporosis.
Alkaline Water: Is It Worth Drinking Or Is It A Hoax? — Eat This Not That
However, the researchers did not expect this to reflect total calcium levels, and they found no evidence that it would improve bone health or help prevent osteoporosis.
A review of the effects of alkali on cancer was published by Dr Tanis Fenton and colleagues in the journal
The review assessed thousands of studies, but the authors found only one proper, randomized trial of acid in the diet and cancer of the urinary bladder.
The researchers note: “In our experience, patients with cancer are approached by salespeople promoting water alkalizing agents as a way to treat their cancer.”
What Is Alkaline Water—and Is It Healthy?
“Despite the promotion of the alkaline diet and alkaline water by the media and vendors, there is almost no real research to support or refute these ideas.”
Acid reflux disease is when the contents of the stomach, which are acidic, splash back into the esophagus.
Acid reflux that continues for a long time can cause damage and a disease known as gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD.
Found that drinking alkaline water may be worth further study as an adjunct to other treatments for reflux disease.
Alkaline Water Benefits, Side Effects, Risks And More
It found that alkaline water at pH 8.8 stops an enzyme linked to reflux disease. It also appears to reduce the acidity of stomach contents.
The work was done in a laboratory rather than in humans. More research will be needed to support these findings.
Plus, stomach acid exists for a purpose. It kills bacteria and other pathogens, and it helps our bodies digest food and absorb nutrients.
Scientists in Shanghai found that 3 to 6 months after drinking alkaline water, people with high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and high blood lipids had lower levels of each of these factors.
Is Alkaline Water Safe For Babies?
That a high-pH electrolyte water reduced blood viscosity in 100 adults, after exercise. It can help reduce cardiovascular stress due to dehydration.
However, the scientists point out that participants had different measures of whole blood viscosity at the start, which could have influenced the results.
It is worth noting that the study was sponsored by Essentia Water, which also provided the alkaline water used.
Since there is no evidence to support the health benefits of alkaline water, there is no recommended amount that improves health.
Nature’s Crystal Alkaline Water
However, if you want to start drinking alkaline water, start with a low intake and gradually increase it. This can reduce the corrosive effects of highly alkaline water.
The alkaline diet, Fenton’s study said, is promoted to correct “the acid state that the modern diet creates.”
“The marketing of the alkaline diet promotes not only a diet, but also the sale of related supplements and water alkalizing machines through almost every media medium, including websites, books, and videos,” the authors wrote.
The balance between sodium and potassium, with possible benefits for bone and muscle health. It can help prevent high blood pressure, strokes and other chronic diseases.
Alkaline Water: What Are The Benefits And Risks?
Of growth hormone, and this can lead to short stature. An alkaline diet can help reduce problems associated with low growth hormone in those who are susceptible.
A study published in 2016 looked at the effect of consuming alkaline water on 150 mice over a period of 3 years.
That those who drank alkaline water had signs of greater longevity, in other words, they aged less and were more likely to live longer.
No significant differences were seen in the heart, liver, kidneys, brain or intestines of the groups studied, and no damage occurred, but there were differences in how the mice and their organs aged.
Should You Be Drinking Alkaline Water?
Although it won’t add calories as part of a balanced or managed diet, there is no research supporting alkaline water as a stand-alone weight loss remedy.
