We definitely bought our house when oak was all the rage and even 8 years ago beige was the right color choice. We still love our favorite neutral wall color, but our style and taste have evolved. The good news for us is that we freshened up our kitchen again with budget friendly DIY projects.
When choosing home furniture, we are now trying to find endless options. However, we didn’t want to add anything new to this kitchen if we didn’t have to. So what do we do when things are looking good but ugly?
Painting the cabinets and tile backsplash really transformed this kitchen into our current aesthetic. A fresh coat of paint can only go so far. I even tried to get away with painting the lower cabinets.

Diy Home Improvement Projects To Try Today
According to Home Advisor, a professional cabinet painter can charge up to “$100 per door and $25 per drawer, or $75-$150 per cabinet.” In general, spray and brush/roller costs are similar. Yes, you get a better surface with spray (but at what cost)?
For reference, our kitchen has 12 upper cabinet doors, an island with 3 drawers and two cabinets, and 11 lower cabinet doors and 12 drawers. The total layout of our kitchen is 12′ x 14′ = 168 m².
The upper cabinets are about 40 square meters and the lower cabinets are approx. 43.5 square meters of the main cabinet.
Therefore, based on the above painting statistics, we estimate that a professional painting job to professionally spray our kitchen cabinets would cost around $2,800.

About $150 for paint and materials. Please note that the color and material will remain. It’s safe to say that painting our kitchen is not just a few hundred dollars.
The $150 I spent on paint and supplies (new foam roller, frog tape, deglazer, paint pan) was definitely worth it to be able to paint not only the cabinets, but the tile backsplash.
Since our cabinets were already painted white, I didn’t need to whitewash them. Here we talk about everything from how to paint painted cabinets. For this inexpensive kitchen remodel (after 8 years) I bought a gallon of SW Rookwood Sash Green and SW Emerald Urethane base color (High Reflective White). I had about half a gallon of each color left over and also used the white paint to paint the back.
We compared different shades of white and decided on the purest and brightest emerald color. We didn’t want to create a contrast with the current white of our templates. Be sure to test the paint colors in different lighting situations and compare them to the existing paint colors in the molds etc.

Sherwin Williams says that one gallon of paint should cover about 100 square feet. Based on my calculations above, it makes perfect sense why a little over half a gallon of paint remains. List price at our local store is $95.99. Proclassic was our favorite color (before we discovered Emerald), 79.99. However, don’t let these prices fool you. I was able to get a 30% discount. I paid about $67 a gallon for Emerald Urethane Enamel Trim.
Pro Tip: When buying paint at Sherwin Williams, I always make sure I get the paint on sale. At the beginning of summer they even got 40% off. But my business partner said that probably wasn’t the case this year because of the supply shortage they were experiencing.
This lack of color actually resulted in me not being able to test the color of the lower kitchen cabinet. But I found Sampilze and that was the saving grace. I will probably always use these huge leather swatches when trying new colors.

The glass mosaic tiles in our kitchen really fit the bill. We had to take it down and redo everything or try to paint it. We figured if it’s scary, we’ll stick it out anyway.
However, this DIY kitchen project turned out much better than we expected. We love the clean and simple look. The only thing that is a little off is the bright white with our current floorboards, but white was the best color.
We love our double-glazed cabinets. A few years ago, I would never have thought about this. But with young children, the idea of dark lower cabinets was really attractive. Everyone who comes there always comments that they like this color.

Hello Selina. Painting the lower kitchen cabinets with Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel was a game changer. The stained oak in our house with the SW proclassic was great, but after 8 years it needed some touch up. This led me to add color and paint over the white. I didn’t mind seeing the grain a bit and the Emerald line got rid of it. If you are worried about the eyes, you can always use a product called Aqua coat. I’ll post the link in the post above. I love this! The two tones look amazing, make your kitchen feel fresh and open, and I bet they look a lot cleaner than white when the kids are running around.
