One of the best ways to make sure your living room looks inviting is to design a layout and floor plan that works for your space, not against it. A convenient layout allows you to entertain guests, relax with family, and do activities like watching TV or playing games comfortably.

But be aware that long, open or square living rooms have different design challenges. What may work for one space may not necessarily make sense for another.
Best Living Room Layouts For Your Floorplan
Here are some common living room design challenges and smart solutions that benefit every space.
With two taller walls than shorter walls at either end of the space, a long or rectangular living room can feel cramped and claustrophobic. But with strategic planning, you can make this type of living room feel welcoming and friendly.
“My living room is really a long, narrow rectangular space,” says designer Abbe Fenimore of Studio Ten 25. “Think a lot about how you’re going to use the room. Instead of just putting things in the room to fill the space, find areas that are fun to use and help create performance.”
Fenimore believes that adding a built-in bar, bookshelves, bookcases or even a similarly styled work area to your furniture can give it the look of a long living room. Be sure to keep doors, heaters, electrical outlets and windows in mind before planning your layout – the location of these items can limit furniture placement and be problematic if not considered before final floor plan decisions are made.

What you want to avoid is a long living room that feels like a hallway, says designer Marysia Rybock of ScavulloDesign Interiors. The use of thin furniture will only emphasize the long lines in the room. Choose a sofa with a personal feel and solid upholstery.
“Using small pieces and variety instead of a couch and coffee table helps the space feel spacious and unique,” says Rybock.
Open living spaces allow for easy entertaining and smooth traffic flow. But a living room that shares space with an adjoining dining room, family room, or kitchen can present a challenge to those who want some definition for each area.
To create the perfect open living room layout, keep the flow of furniture and accessories open so that your family and friends can multitask together.
Cozy Living Room Ideas From Designers On How To Make Your Interiors More Comfy
A dark gray living room with a fireplace, tv, sofa, large ottoman and soft carpet and a stylish kitchen in the background.
“Look for vignettes instead of two sofas next to the fireplace,” says Rybock. “Creating separate living areas makes space more intimate, as open floor plans can be large.”
Thinking about the function of the room will help you make good layout decisions. An open living room often serves as the focal point of a home, so make sure any floor plans include comfortable areas for everyday activities such as watching TV, eating or socializing.
“Moving the furniture away from the wall and wrapping it all together with a rug, balancing it with ottomans, and adding extra chairs will balance the room,” says Fenimore. “Stick with one main color so the open spaces don’t clash, which can make the room look cluttered.”
L Shaped Living Room Layout Ideas: How To Arrange Your Furniture
Adding warmth and creating a welcoming atmosphere can be a challenge for square living rooms. When all your furniture is pushed against the wall, which puts the chairs further away, you can make the space feel cold. But you can also make your square living room feel crowded or messy if all the furniture is forced into the corner. Instead, make the furniture float away from the walls.
“You can get more surface space by having a console table behind a sofa and a variety of chairs, such as a sofa and four chairs that don’t match, that can float around the room and even be moved,” says Rybock. ,” and then use the dining table as an anchor in the middle of the space.” Once you’ve put the furniture in place, Fenimore suggests using a textured or colorful pattern to fill the room.

Living Room Furniture Layouts That Make The Most Of Your Space
So here is the plan. If I follow all the steps carefully, I still feel like I don’t quite understand the layout of my living room. You know, the flow of each room?
Look, I understand. Decorating is HARD. And especially, if you haven’t done much.
But, there was a time in 1989 when I was a fourth semester student at the New York School of Interior Design. The coursework was to design and (pretend) deliver an open concept living/dining room. And, provide a hand-drawn color rendering of the two-point perspective.
Also, I was six weeks pregnant with the beautiful boy you can see here!

They throw you into the deep like that; and then, you learn very quickly how to make room arrangements. There is no choice.
However, I had taken a course in space planning. And this is a course that I find very important. Spacing is a more technical way of saying the arrangement of rooms.
Above is a drawing of a typical living room. It measures 24′ long by 15′ deep. I say usually, because of course the room you use to live in can be big or small. The ratio can also be different.
For example, my living room is about 20′ long by 13′-5″ deep. And that’s “about” since none of my walls are at perfect 90 degree angles.

Above are four possible living room configurations. Of course, there are many more options. But these are some of the most common in terms of installing doors and windows.
Haha! Thanks, but believe me, I don’t work as hard as you think I do. In fact, I did that almost four years ago! I was going to use them for something else, but that didn’t happen.
First, let’s look at the basic rules for planning space. Here you will learn how to draw a floor plan and what materials you will need to use. And then, we’ll look at each image separately, so you can see what it is.
We enter the living room from the hallway and ahhh, my favorite group chat of all time. Sofa with four chairs. I have done this program several times. In this photo, there is an 84″ sofa, two armchairs and two armchairs near the fireplace.

Here you can see a smaller 78″ sofa with two recliners. I usually make two 20 inch pillows and two 22 inch pillows.
And if the sofa arms are 23″-25″ standard, the length of the table should be between 23″-27″ long. I have been known to have my legs or midsection amputated if it is too long.
However, we made a round coffee table. This is 36″, but we can also do 42″ here.
There is an armchair, with or without an ottoman or footstool. There is the occasional small table or garden stool next to the seat.
Living Room Furniture Layout Ideas To Keep The Balance
In the front of the room is a console table about 60″ long with two buffet lights.
At the back of the room is a baby grand piano. If you don’t play piano but play cards, a four-seat game table can be added.
This arrangement of the room is different on the four seats and the seats are more related to each other than the sofa. But, not so far that they are too far from the bed to talk. This can also work if your living room is only 14 feet deep.
The coffee table is 42″ in diameter, but can be made as big as 48. I also made round ottomans that size.
Ideas For Sofa Arrangements To Maximize Your Living Room
Square end tables are 23″-27″ tall and approximately 20″-24″ square. Any bigger than that and it starts to look too big for a room this size.
Between the two chairs is a regular table about 18″-20″ in diameter. It can also be a garden bench.
In front of the room there are two half-moon tables with buffet lamps. However, we can also skip those and place a chest with a lamp and a mirror between the two windows.
This room has only one door. The back wall has no windows, so in this case a built-in bookshelf
