I wanted to make a post about how to design completely online using the eDesign process and what is involved, and what you as a designer do when you contact us to help you with a project. How do we put everything together?

For that, I thought I’d share this e-design project we did for a small studio for a young couple. The project involved furnishing the bedroom/living area of a small studio and the inspiration for the space was a modern industrial design style.

Once we receive your project details, we will consider the property, client needs, requests, and begin the research process.
This particular property was a studio apartment, most studios have a multi-purpose room combining sleeping, living and kitchen areas with an en-suite bathroom. They are perfect for single men, women or couples as a first place to stay. Since studios tend to be a bit smaller than some homes, with most of their living areas combined into one large open-planned space, several things need to be taken into account. The most important thing is to pay attention to the size and scale of the furniture items before buying.
Beforehand drawing a floor plan helps us as the designers plan the room space as accurately as possible based on the measurements received from the client. This handy measuring guide I created can help take some of the guesswork out of drawing a floor plan of your space.
Based on your needs, we will set up your space neatly and comfortably and ensure that all space and traffic limitations are met and that items fit together comfortably and harmoniously. Depending on the location, we may work through some configurations and determine what is best for you.

Once you have determined your space allowances and furniture configuration and ideal size, we can begin the buying process.
The initial concept board is a suggested selection of all the furniture, accents and accessories we’ve found based on your design style and space requests. This is an important part of the process as it gives us the opportunity to provide some ideas and gain valuable insight into what the customer likes and/or doesn’t like. From this advice, we can determine what the customer is looking for and provide further suggestions accordingly.
The idea behind this project was to create an elegant and modern, minimalist space that feels small, warm and inviting. Their design style request was modern industrial with an eclectic vintage feel.
The industrial design is definitely a favorite of mine, bringing me elements of exposed brick, hardwood floors, exposed ceilings, rustic metal, as well as plush rugs and soft textured throw pillows and throws to bring a cozy feel to the space. Industrial design is becoming more and more in demand because it is so elegant and simple and of course cheap.

Once we determined the design style, it was “industrial” for this particular project, we needed to figure out a way to emulate the feel in the room to make it look that way, so we painted industrial on the walls. Chose the option of adding effects to a wallpaper. Removable to replicate the look of exposed brick and weathered wood planks. Personally, I love the look of one accent wall rather than doing all four walls the same effect or color. I feel like it adds some depth and dimension to the space rather than the feeling of being in a box 🙂
Once you’ve set the general mood of the room, the fun part begins, researching and choosing all the furniture and accessories! I knew I had chosen the right career when I actually enjoyed buying furniture more than I did clothes!
We then decided on the color palette, and once that was set, things started to fall into place. This customer liked the Dark Gray and Blue colour.
So during my research I found these fabulous chairs with a warm velvet back that spoke a lot to me and I knew they would look so perfect in the space. Then I found this complementary area rug in charcoal and cream that would go perfectly with the back chairs. As you can see, creating a conceptual framework is like putting together a jigsaw puzzle, choosing pieces that fit together smoothly and harmoniously!
Things Every Bachelor Pad Needs
Once the initial concept board is complete, we will send it back to the client for feedback. We love giving our customers the opportunity to consider their suggestions and ideas and again welcome any questions or comments they may have. Sometimes we don’t get it right the first time, so we provide two supplemental revisions to the concept board before moving on to the rendering process.
The rendering process takes place after all the selections on the concept board have been agreed upon. We took all the items on the concept board and inserted them into a conceptual 2-D rendering of the room to help you visualize the design in the space. This is very useful for many of those people who have difficulty visualizing everything in their mind at once. Through the magic of technology and some very friendly furniture vendors, we can create these fabulous looks.
Included with the final rendering are shopping lists for all major vendors. This is a PDF document that contains all the links to the furniture items contained in the concept board. This will be sent to the customer in an email form and you can click on any item and link directly to the supplier’s website so you can shop and buy whenever you want.
Finally, I’m not a fan of sending the customer everything like “see you later” and “thanks for your business” and you’re left wondering where to start and what I need to know first. That’s why I want to provide a simple installation guide to help you navigate the design and provide some design guidelines, tips and tricks to make the installation process as easy as possible.
