University of St. Thomas may soon have a master’s program in social work. If approved, it will be New Brunswick’s only English-language master’s in social work program and STU’s only master’s degree program.

STU Associate Vice President of Communications Jeffrey Carleton said having the only English language master’s program in the province is essential for individuals who want to pursue careers in social work.

“Social workers who want to diagnose as part of their work must have a master’s degree in social work from an accredited social work program,” Carleton said.

“So, to advance in this field, you need a higher level of education beyond a bachelor’s degree in social work.”

Last year, STU submitted a proposal to the Maritime Provinces Higher Education Commission to potentially have the program.

The Université de Moncton offers a master’s degree in social work in French. In the Maritime Provinces, Master of Social Work programs are available at Dalhousie University in Halifax and Memorial University in St. John’s.

Carleton said the master’s degree will be a one-year full-time program for students who already have a social work degree.

According to Carleton, the current social work degree program would be changed to be completed in four years instead of five. Students would spend two years in general liberal arts programs, then focus on social work in the final two years of the program.

Carleton said it will provide students with advanced skills in theory and policy, practice, professional leadership, and supervision and research.

Students can choose to do a thesis or an internship as part of the program. The curriculum for the degree would meet standards set by the Canadian Association for Social Work Education, a charitable association made up of institutions that offer social work education in the country.

According to the New Brunswick Association of Social Workers, there are about 1,900 registered social workers in the province and about 300 registered have a master’s degree in social work.

Carleton said the provincial government’s children and youth programs that offer addiction treatment and mental health services require a master’s degree in social work. Employers in the province such as Horizon Health Network and Vitalité Health Network also require an M.SW for employment.

As part of the school’s affiliation with UNB, STU focuses on undergraduate degrees. However, the master’s case is different because STU started offering B.Sw courses decades ago because of the need in the province, Carleton said.

The STU School of Social Work conducted a survey of 250 social workers in the province over the past three years and 87 percent said they were interested in pursuing an M.Sw degree at STU.

“With eight full-time professors and part-time faculty members and administrative support, we feel we have adequate human resources,” he said.

In addition, STU brought in an expert from Carleton University to review the program proposal. The expert felt that library resources, graduate student support, faculty, staff, and physical resources were adequate.

The university has not yet made a final decision on when the program will begin or when applications will open, pending approval from the Maritime Provinces Higher Education Commission.

How To Become A Social Worker

You will learn the skills and knowledge needed to critically examine and engage with development policies and practices. You will also learn ethical approaches to working with diverse populations in global and local contexts.

This specialization is offered primarily online with three mandatory residencies at our Calgary campus. The flexible format allows you to stay at home and balance postgraduate studies with work, life and family demands.

You will be required to complete a 500-hour practicum, which can be completed in Canada or at an international internship during the final year of your program. You must ensure that you are available to complete the practicum.

You will learn about current management theories and practices in different organizational contexts. Learn how to plan, implement and evaluate a program; policy analysis and development; organizational dynamics and changes; control; community capacity building, social action and advocacy. A master’s degree in social work from an accredited online program will help prepare students for an exciting career change. Depending on the number of classes taken, full-time MSW programs typically take two years to complete online, while part-time MSW programs can take anywhere from two and a half to four years.
