Can You See Your Period And Still Be Pregnant – Although some women experience vaginal bleeding during pregnancy, you may not get your period while pregnant. Some also report that they have intermittent bleeding that feels like regular periods. But vaginal bleeding during pregnancy is not the same as menstruation.
Learn why spotting can be common during pregnancy, and why it’s important to tell your provider if you have any bleeding or spotting while you’re pregnant.
Can You See Your Period And Still Be Pregnant
Pregnant Each month, your uterus grows a thick layer of blood in preparation for implanting an egg. If you don’t get pregnant that month, you shed this tissue and blood and this is your period.
Period Sex: Safety, Benefits, And Tips
But once an egg is implanted in the lining of the uterus, hormones tell us that the blood-rich tissue must remain intact to support the growing baby. And you don’t lose it and your period starts again until your pregnancy ends.
Non-period bleeding occurs during pregnancy for various reasons. It is important to know the difference between spotting and bleeding. Spotting is a few drops of blood on your underwear every now and then, but not enough to cover the panty liner. Bleeding, on the other hand, is a heavy flow of blood for which you need a liner or pad to prevent it from soaking your clothes.
Some spotting in early pregnancy is normal and occurs in 15 to 25 percent of pregnancies. The uterus may bleed more easily as more blood vessels develop in the uterus. Scarring can occur when a fertilized egg implants in the lining of the uterus around 10 to 14 days after conception. This is called “implantation bleeding”.
Always call your provider if you experience bleeding or spotting during pregnancy. It can be a sign of something more serious, such as an infection, placental problems, an impending miscarriage, or an ectopic pregnancy, which can be life-threatening. (See our article on vaginal bleeding in pregnancy for a full rundown of possible causes.)
Why Is My Period Lighter Than Usual? 6 Common Reasons
Unlike your menstrual period, spotting during pregnancy only lasts 1 to 2 days. If these drops are implantation bleeding, it will occur a few days before your next expected period. It is very light and you don’t need to change the pad. Implantation bleeding does not require treatment and will stop on its own. Even if you think you have implantation bleeding, call your healthcare provider to let them know.
Call your doctor or midwife as soon as you notice bleeding or spotting during pregnancy – even if the bleeding has stopped. Most women with minor bleeding during pregnancy go into labor without complications, but you may need an evaluation to rule out any serious complications. Also see for other features:
If your doctor’s office is closed, go to the nearest emergency room if you can’t reach your provider. If they determine that your bleeding is not severe, potential treatments may include resting and avoiding sex, travel, and strenuous exercise. It is important that you follow your provider’s recommendations to keep you and your baby healthy.

Many women say that they know some women who have seen their periods even after conception, but that is scientifically untrue, even though she may experience some bleeding, whatever bleeding she has is not due to her menstrual cycle.
Implantation bleeding is a small amount of blood or bleeding that occurs 10 to 14 days after conception.
It occurs when a fertilized egg attaches to the lining of the uterus by the time a woman gets her period.
Bleeding from implantation bleeding is not menstrual blood, but a woman may think she is actually menstruating.

This has to do with the position of her uterus and when the placenta is close to the uterus. If it is close to the uterus, it can go from bleeding to miscarriage.
If the uterus tears and ruptures, the woman may have uncontrolled vaginal bleeding. This usually happens if a woman’s uterus has ruptured before giving birth, which is common in women who have had a caesarean section.
This happens when the baby is about to be born, the placenta may separate from the uterus and cause heavy bleeding, abdominal pain and cramping.
Preterm labor is birth before 37 weeks of gestation. Premature labor can also lead to heavy discharge of mucus. This discharge may also have some flecks of blood.

I had sex last month when I was on my period and only after my bf came did we realize the condom broke. I took a preg test and it was negative and I bled last week, maybe it was my period but I’m not sure. Can You Still Get Your Period If You’re Pregnant?
If an egg isn’t fertilized and doesn’t implant in the wall of the uterus, the body says, “Okay, we don’t need this lining of the uterus that we’ve been building for months,” and you have a period. . The lining of the uterus is shed from the entire body through the vagina (same period as blood). If the fertilized egg implants into the uterus (and pregnancy happens), then the body says “Oh, I need all this uterine lining to nourish the egg!” And you don’t have a period.
Stopped Or Missed Periods
Bleeding can occur when a person is pregnant, it is not just a period. Reasons for this may include:
Spotting, implantation bleeding and ectopic pregnancy are the three we get asked about the most, so we’ve got more information on them below. It should be noted that implantation bleeding and ectopic pregnancy bleeding are usually uncommon.
It’s also helpful to remember that using hormonal birth control or emergency contraceptive pills (like Plan B) may cause bleeding differently than you’re used to. Hormones can change how you bleed during your period, and using something like Plan B can bring your next period earlier or delay it by up to 2 weeks.
The only way to know if you are pregnant is to take a pregnancy test. It is not possible to tell from missing or irregular periods alone. Pregnancy tests are accurate if taken 14 days after you have had sex where you are at risk of pregnancy. And they are very accurate! For more information please see one of our recent blog posts:
Can Sex Change Your Period?
Going by the scenario described above, there is really no risk of pregnancy when someone is on their period. Eggs are fertilized only between 24-48 hours after ovulation. Ovulation usually occurs 11-16 days earlier. During menstruation, the egg and uterine lining are not used and are shed. Even if sperm were introduced to the equation at this point, they wouldn’t be able to do anything (since the sperm would die within 5 days). Now if someone has a cycle of less than 25 days between periods, there is a risk of pregnancy from sperm left over after sex during a period. Spotting is light bleeding that occurs between periods. While period bleeding is usually a heavy enough flow that people use various period products to absorb, spotting is more likely to show up as a few light spots of blood that you notice in your underwear or while wiping in the bathroom. These spots are a different color (often red, dark red, or brown) and have a different consistency than your regular period blood. Causes include hormonal birth control, emergency contraceptive pills, urinary tract infections, STIs, pelvic inflammatory disease, polyps, ovulation, early pregnancy, or particularly rough sex.
