Tile To Wood Floor Transition Strips
You see… eight years ago, floating floor systems like LVT or LVP hadn’t come to what they are today- with the obvious use of installing over existing sub-floors. In fact, what I knew was my only option at the time with the tedious and messy work of demolishing my existing floors and then paying a sub-contractor at a hefty premium to install the floor- new land
And so… I lived with floors that I absolutely despised for about four years… that is… until I found a press and lock floor system that the manufacturer’s instructions said I could lay right over the dirty ceramic tiles in here my kitchen
Since that discovery, I have used two other types of flooring in the same way throughout my 1980’s gardener, so I thought I would use this post to show you the many options available for this unusual type of material.

Comparing Tile Vs. Wood Floors For Your Home
LVT was my first foray into the world of floating land. As you can see in the photo above, my husband and I used luxury vinyl tiles to cover the old ceramic tiles in my kitchen (you can read my LVT Installation Tutorial here), and it makes a freakin’ difference.
The best thing about LVT is that it is great for areas prone to water exposure because the product is waterproof (unlike traditional hardwood). I also found the product to be extremely low maintenance due to the absence of grout and the inevitable grout line issue that presents with traditional tile.
Installing this product is beginner friendly and we were able to completely change the look of our kitchen within a weekend.
Not all luxury vinyl tile is suitable for installation over existing tiles, so you need to make sure it is clearly stated in the manufacturer’s instructions as “suitable for installation over a tiled sub-floor”. already exist”.
How To Paint A Tile Floor
If the LVT flooring is not thick enough, you risk a telegraph effect where the grout lines of the ceramic tile begin to show through the new flooring for an unpleasant vibration.
Luxury vinyl tile and luxury vinyl plank are essentially the same product. They are both waterproof and require no grout or sealing, however vinyl plank luxury comes in longer pieces and is designed more for a wood-like effect.
While you might think I put tiles in my bedroom, this particular type of bent and locked floor is actually plank….
As with LVT, you need to make sure that the luxury vinyl plank product you go with is glued together thickly enough to avoid the risk of telegraphing. From a distance, you wouldn’t guess that the floor in my bathroom (you can read more details on my bathroom here) isn’t actually tile.
How To Paint Tile Floors (and Avoid Peeling!)
Two years ago, I had my heart completely blown when Shaw Floors approached me wanting to collaborate with me on a new type of engineered hardwood that can be installed over tile and hardwood floors such as LVT or LVP.
I decided to install reclaimed hardwood floors in my main house (which has horrible ceramic tiles) and in my dining room, living room and bedrooms (which have hardwood that looks like it comes straight from the house.
The best thing about floating planks is that they are both safe and durable. What I find even more interesting about this product compared to LVT and LVP is that when we went to sell our house this year, we were able to boast in the MLS description that the house had hardwood floors. new throughout.
While floating planks may cost a little more than luxury vinyl products, if you have resale value in mind, this is definitely what you want to consider.
Pros & Cons Of Ceramic Kitchen Tile
Given the cutting-edge nature of this particular product, this may be the only hardwood option on the market that can be installed over a tile subfloor. At least, this is the only product I have come across of its kind.
While I have not personally used laminate flooring with an attached pad, it is comparable to many vinyl products in that it is DIY friendly and similar in appearance.
I would say the biggest difference in vinyl and laminate (in terms of performance at least) is that vinyl is completely synthetic and laminate is not.
Given that laminate has a base that has products through wood, it is not the best option for rooms that are prone to water exposure such as bathrooms or kitchens.
Groutable Vinyl Tile (an Easy Installation)
In terms of looks, however, if you’re going for a hardwood floor vibe, the aesthetics of laminate may be more convincing.
As with any product, you need to make sure that the manufacturer classifies the product as suitable for installation on tile. Not all laminate is created equal!
After living with LVT, LVP and floating planks for years, I can personally attest that these are all very viable options and we haven’t had any issues with telegraphing.
With so many flooring options to choose from (technology has come so freakin’ far) I hope you see now that there are no more excuses for living with ugly tile floors!

Can You Install Carpet Over Tile Floor?
Favorite project ever! Well, I say about maybe 50% of all the projects we do around here, but this one is definitely up there on the charts of most-transformative-for-the-lowest-cost.

Even though we’ve gotten our ceramic tile in the kitchen and hallway bathroom using a grout pen in the past, this floor seems to go a little further. And since we’re sticking with the existing countertop and tub for now (until the real gut/renovation is down the road), I wanted a floor that would update the 80s beige a little better.
Unless I want to steer clear of the tile color and stenciling route like many DIYers have been doing here lately. With a 3-month-old baby in the house, I don’t like the idea of greenhouses and I want this job to be quick and installation in about an hour or two.
Should I Repair Or Replace Floor Tile?
Normally, if you are doing a major renovation, I would not suggest installing vinyl flooring over tile. I think that for the right land, it should be done in the “right” way. But for a quick Phase 1 fix, it’s a great DIY-able solution to tide you over until you’re ready for a junk contractor job.
So if you want to do the same thing to some of your tile floors that have seen better days, here’s how we make it happen.
2. Once the mortar has dried in about 24-48 hours, you can sand any rough spots with medium grit sand.
3. Wipe the floor and remove any dirt with a duster since you don’t want to trap anything under your vinyl floor sheet.

4. Remove the quarter round and baseboards with a crowbar and mallet or drop. Here’s a post to help you with it, if you haven’t already. Set the quarter trim and base boxes aside to be reinstalled after the vinyl sheet is on (assuming they are in good condition).
5. Measure all the edges around the room and draw a picture of your room on a piece of paper using the measurements. Don’t have a dull moment with this guy around, even with the random measurement jobs. 😉
Include measurements of any obstacles in the room as well. We already removed our old toilet (this is a great video for removing the toilet with a good tip to prevent water from leaking everywhere), so we measured where to cut a hole.
