According to the World Health Organization (WHO), about 236,000 people die in water every year around the world.

In 2019, the Lloyd’s Register Foundation World Risk Poll, based on more than 150,000 interviews with Gallup in 142 countries and territories, found that the majority of people aged 15 and over – 55% – said they could not swim without help.

This picture changes only in rich countries, where 24% of adults say they cannot swim without help, while almost three out of four — 76% – say they can swim.
Although many people around the world cannot swim, most of them are women. Almost six in ten men (57%) say they can swim, but only one in three women (32%) say they can swim.
There is a large gender gap on this question in high-income countries, including the high-income group, where most people report being able to swim without assistance. However, fewer men (39%) and women (15%) in the low-income group say they can swim; this is the only group of countries that have such income.

Gender gaps exist in many parts of the world, although they are narrower in high-income areas, including Northern and Western Europe and Australia and New Zealand.
