The first step to knowing if you can get pregnant on your period is to understand your menstrual cycle, which is… complicated. Most women’s cycles last around 28 days – but this isn’t always the case and things can vary from month to month.
There are several phases that last (on average) 28 days, starting with the menstrual phase (your period). The day you get your period is the first day of your cycle, and it lasts up to seven days. Then there is the follicular phase, which is when your body prepares for ovulation.

The ovulation phase occurs when your body releases a mature egg, which is fertilized. And finally, there is the luteal phase. If your egg is fertilized, you may have a baby down the road, but if not, your baby’s bottom will flow normally, which will start your period and repeat the cycle.
“If you’re not pregnant, it’s usually 14 days from when you ovulate to when you get your period. What changes for a person is the warming phase — called the follicular phase — when an egg is being prepared,” she says. If you’re trying to avoid pregnancy, Dr. Minkin recommends always using protection, whether it’s birth control or condoms. And, don’t rely on other fake prevention methods, like douching or douching – they don’t work.

“The problem is that the sperm that can get you pregnant stay there very quickly after ejaculation – they can be in the cervix within 20 minutes, so if you shower an hour or two later, that’s not going to put you off getting pregnant,” she says. “When it comes to ejaculation, even the first drop of sperm has a lot of reserve: there are millions of guys, and it’s really concentrated stuff. So even if it’s (as it’s usually known) a drop or two of semen, that fluid is all you need to get pregnant.”
