Can Your Period Still Come On If Your Pregnant – POV: You’re on your period. When you look down and think, ‘Wait, why is my period blood brown?’ or pink. or black. Or any other color you might not expect to see.
As it turns out, the color of your menstrual blood can tell you a surprising amount about your cycle and your health. So we Dr. Allegra Cummings, OB-GYN at Weill Cornell Medicine, asked us to talk about what each color means and when to see your doctor.
Can Your Period Still Come On If Your Pregnant
The good news: dark red or brown period blood is usually nothing to worry about. “The primary reason period blood is brown is because it’s old blood,” Dr. Cummings said.
Reasons Your Period Is Light
This usually happens at the beginning or end of your period, when your flow is light. Because the longer the blood takes to leave the body, the longer it oxidizes (read: exposed to oxygen), making it darker. “It’s not necessarily a bad thing,” Dr. Cummings said. “Often that means it’s a light bleed and so it’s coming out slowly.”
Another cause of dark red or brown period blood: birth control. This can reduce how much you bleed overall, Dr. And when there isn’t a lot of blood, it can take longer to come out, Cummings said.
And something that may cause brown blood in your underwear, but not actually your period: implantation bleeding. Aka, normal spotting that occurs after two weeks of pregnancy.
Pink period blood may appear at the beginning of your period. And usually that color is because blood is mixed with vaginal discharge. (Which is nothing to worry about.) It can also occur if you’re on birth control, as it can lower your estrogen levels and cause pinkness during periods.
Can Sex Change Your Period?
Note: If you’re having blood in your discharge but your period hasn’t started, it could be due to small tears from the vagina after sex. Or, it could be normal spotting during ovulation.
Bright red blood usually doesn’t have much time to oxidize. This often occurs during steady flow. “When people have heavy periods, typically you’ll get that bright red blood,” Dr. Cummings said.
Black blood is older than dark red or brown blood. But if you’re experiencing black period bleeding with some pregnancy symptoms and it doesn’t turn into a period (read: it only lasts one to three days), it could actually be implantation bleeding. Or, it could be a sign of miscarriage. Yes, the human body can be confusing. Contact your doctor if something feels bad or if you have questions.
If you see orange blood, Dr. Cummings explained that it couldn’t just be menstrual blood. This means, blood may be mixed with the vaginal discharge caused by an underlying infection. Like bacterial vaginosis (aka BV), which is an inflammation caused by a bacterial imbalance, or trichomoniasis (STD). If this happens to you, call your doctor to get more information.

Another case of vaginal discharge mixed with period blood. Gray discharge can be a sign of BV. which may come with other symptoms such as itching and a fishy smell. Also another case where you should contact your doctor.
This could be a sign of an infection such as trichomoniasis or BV. Again, contact your doctor if you see green in your menstrual blood.
Don’t be alarmed by “jelly-like” bright or dark red period blood clots. Because they are usually normal collections of blood cells and tissues. But if you notice blood clots larger than a quarter size during your period (more on that below), consult your doctor. Speaking of which…
Two to three teaspoons of blood loss during menstruation is considered normal. And this is usually within four to five days (although it can vary slightly for different people). But if you’re bleeding profusely, it could be a sign of menorrhagia — heavy or prolonged bleeding that can lead to anemia. So if you want to see a doctor…

It’s a worry-free pass for unprotected sex. But wait. That is not so true. Before you throw away your condom, here’s everything you need to know about your chances of getting pregnant during your period.
Period Sex: Safety, Benefits, And Tips
The first step to knowing if you can get pregnant on your period is to understand your period, which is…complicated. Most women’s cycles last about 28 days — but that’s not always the case, and things can vary from month to month.
During that (average) 28 days there are several phases, starting with the menstrual phase (aka your period). The day you get your period is the first day of your cycle, and it lasts seven or so days. Then comes the follicular phase, when your body prepares to fertilize an egg.
The ovulation phase is when your body releases a mature egg and aims to fertilize it. And, finally, there is the luteal phase. If your egg fertilizes, you may have a baby on the way, and if it doesn’t, the lining of your uterus sheds as usual, starting your period and repeating the cycle.
“If you’re not pregnant, it’s usually 14 days from ovulation to when you get your period. For people, the warm-up phase – the so-called follicular phase – is when the egg is being produced,” says Mary Jane Minkin, MD, clinical professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences at Yale School of Medicine.
I’m Not Pregnant, So Why Is My Period Late?
Any time you have sex, there’s a chance it could lead to a baby — whether you’re on your period or not. But have sex when you are ovulating
“If you have sex on the last day of your period, sperm can hang around for a while,” Dr. Minkin says. “It’s very unlikely that someone will ovulate during their period, but if you deposit sperm on the last day of your period and you ovulate very early in your cycle — maybe four or five days after your period — the sperm can fertilize the egg. resulting in pregnancy.”
Dr. Minkin says this doesn’t happen very often, because most people don’t have that short of a cycle and it usually takes longer for an egg to fertilize, but
Possible That’s why it’s so important to find out when you’re ovulating, because you’ll know if you’re at risk of getting pregnant during your period and if your fertility is high.
Foods To Avoid During Your Period
“In general, if you have a 23-day cycle, you’ll probably ovulate on day nine, and if you have a 33-day cycle, you’ll probably ovulate on day 19,” Dr. Minkin says. Ovulation lasts 12 to 48 hours, but sperm can stay in your body for about four to five days, so you can be fertile for seven or more days. Gee, Dr. It’s actually a pretty wide window, Minkin says.
If you’re trying to avoid pregnancy, Dr. Minkin recommends always using protection, whether it’s birth control or a condom. And, don’t rely on any other rumination prevention methods, like douching or venting — because they don’t work.
“The problem is that the sperm that impregnates you rises quickly after ejaculation — they can be in the uterus within 20 minutes, so if you doze an hour or two later, it’s not going to prevent you from getting pregnant,” she says. “In retrospect, even the first drop of sperm has a lot of storage: it has millions of guys and it’s really concentrated stuff. So even if he ejects (as is commonly known) one or two drops of seminal fluid is all you need to get pregnant.”
So if your goal is not to get pregnant, the only sure way to protect yourself is to not have sex. Other than that, there’s always a chance — so be safe
