The renewal, the fourth in the franchise’s 75-year history, aims to appeal to “contemporary audience sensibilities while maintaining Thomas’ core message of the value of friendship.”
The last major shake-up was in 2018, when the series introduced an “inclusive” gender-balanced, multicultural cast of characters in an attempt to appeal to a wider global audience.
According to the creators, the episodes will feature 26 “social-emotional, cognitive and physical life lessons,” including friendship, teamwork and self-help.
Fred Soulie, senior vice president and general manager of Mattel Television, said, “This new creative direction for the classic Thomas and Friends franchise is designed to appeal to contemporary audiences while still maintaining the core ethos of the beloved characters: the value of friendship.

Living indoors with small children means distracting them from the same thing, over and over again, until you – like Ben Jenkins – go crazy
Every parent of a young child in quarantine either knows this fact or is about to learn it: you don’t get to choose where they find their joy.
For example, my two-and-a-half-year-old son loves listening to the Thomas and Friends Storytime podcast. It is, to some extent, his favorite thing to do. By a similar margin, the opening “toot toot” of the podcast is my least favorite sound on the entire planet, which now triggers my fight or flight reflex every time I hear it. But due to some whimsical evolution, I can’t deny my boy his train show, because it gives him the kind of happiness unattainable by adults without the use of Class A drugs.

Even so, I’m honestly faced with how much I hate this show and the trains in it. Some of this can be attributed to entering our fourth week of quarantine with no end in sight. Most of it can be attributed to Thomas and Friends Storytime being a bad train series that I hate.
There are a lot of interesting reasons to hate this show, but I won’t go into any of them here. This is simply a list of all the trains in the series, ranked by how much I hate them. This order is not final. Those in a similar position to me may want to make their own list of trains they hate from their child’s train podcast. It doesn’t have to be a train podcast in particular that drives you crazy in quarantine. For me, however – and I really can’t stress this enough – it is.
Nia is the least disliked train on my son’s train podcast, probably because she gets so little air time. I can’t tell you much about Nia, except that she’s painted orange, which is fine, and that she was once tasked with bringing an elephant to the Sodor Animal Park and the elephant ran away, which it didn’t.
A lot of people don’t like Gordon, who is arrogant and rude, but I feel an affinity for this train because his disdain for all the other trains on the island of Sodor is very similar to my own. There aren’t many Gordon-centric episodes in Thomas and Friends Storytime, but as if to make up for it, the actor shouts his every line at an unsettling volume. Gordon doesn’t go on adventures like the other trains and seems to really like the basic job of “being a train”. For this reason alone, he is not listed anymore.
Thomas & Friends Talking Thomas Motorized Toy Train
I’m told there’s a famous episode of an old TV show where Henry is walled up in a tunnel for all eternity as punishment for disobeying. I’m not exaggerating when I say that if this happened to any of the trains in Thomas and Friends Storytime, I’d take my shirt off and run around the living room like I’d just won the World Cup.
Diesel is a diesel-powered shunting engine and is the closest thing to an antagonist that Thomas and Friends Storytime has. Why is he the antagonist? Well, when the Reverend W. Awdry dreamed of the magical island of Sodor to delight and entertain a generation of children, he decided to establish a blood feud between diesel and steam engines. I can only assume he did it for his own inscrutable Protestant reasons, and the end result is a kind of completely incongruous, sectarian tension that runs through the series. Diesel is the boss of the diesel faction on Sodor and once stole a Christmas tree. Pathetic.
My son has episodes that he likes more than others. Thomas’ Animal Friends, with Rebecca, is his favorite episode of all, and as a result I know Thomas’ Animal Friends better than literally any piece of media or art I’ve ever encountered. The events that unfold in Thomas’s Animal Friends are clearer to me than anything that has happened to me in real life, including the birth of my son. For this reason, I would like to see Rebecca the Large Tender Engine explode with massive amounts of dynamite.
I’ll be the first to admit that Cranky The Crane is not a train. He is still on my list.

. It’s a 50-second clip of a train pulling into a station, and when it was first shown in Paris, the audience was so terrified that they ran screaming from the room. This was prescient, because 125 years later, this is my exact reaction when James The Red Engine appears in any episode of Thomas and Friends Storytime.
James is introduced as a “funny engine”. To begin with, this is a lie. At no point in any of the episodes does James do anything that can even be generously described in those terms. The podcast’s insistence that James is a comedian might be what sends me over the edge into lock-in, tearing our speakers off the wall and putting them and myself into blessed traffic.
The only reason this guy isn’t in first place is because the other day we were at the park and my son put his arms out and ran down the path and said “tut tut, I’m Thomas!” with a huge smile on my face which was the best thing that happened to me all week.
Regardless, Thomas is a big piece of shit, no doubt about it. J.R.R. Tolkien once said that “cellar door” is the most beautiful phrase in the English language. It was only because he had never heard the phrase “Thomas The Tank Engine was turned into atoms by a futuristic light weapon”.

And so, by default, Percy, The Green Engine, is my most hated engine on Thomas and Friends Storytime. He’s in most episodes saying things like “Last one to Tidmouth Sheds is a broken boiler!” without any consequences from a healthy God.
