Jobs As An Interior Designer – A while ago I received an email at work asking for advice on how to get a job in interior design.
You see, I’ve worked in the interior design world for 18 months, but before that I had no qualifications, experience and understanding and connections in the industry.
Jobs As An Interior Designer
I have worked in marketing and communications for my entire career – working in a number of roles including being the Minister of Health’s Information Officer, Assistant Marketing Manager at a further education institute and even a Commissioner at the Department of Defence. The world has nothing to do with the interior.
Top Jobs And Careers In Learning Design And Technology
It was a world I desperately wanted to be a part of, but I had no real clue how to get a job in interior design other than receiving formal education. I wasn’t quite sure about it – firstly, there’s usually quite a bit of expense involved, secondly, a huge time commitment, and thirdly it would mean I’d probably have to quit my job and lose my income. Not an option.
I was unhappy with my job and after a long hiatus I decided to take the leap and change the direction of my career. You can read about it here. Getting a full-time job from home wasn’t my intention when I left my job, but here I am working from home right after leaving my corporate job!
If you’re wondering how to get a job in interior design, here are my tips. Now, as I mentioned above, this isn’t official advice – it’s just from my observations and experiences, but I hope you find it useful.
Pinterest, Instagram, blogs, TV shows and magazines – it’s not easy to have so much interior design material at your fingertips.
Interior Design Schools Worth Applying To
Find out what’s trending, learn about different styles and techniques, and get to know who the major players are. It will become valuable material for you.
You don’t have to pay customers to get experience. Use your home to practice and improve your skills. Regardless of your style or design interests, use your own space to learn and find your style – whether you rent or own your home.
When you start praising your home, you will receive requests from your friends and family for help as well. These are your first “customers”!
Once you’ve started developing skills in your own home and those of your friends and family, it’s time to start digging into what you love and are good at. Is it the design of bold, bright spaces? Maybe it’s designing great spaces on a budget, or your practical strengths are working with existing interiors and designing them with great style to make them look amazing.
Studios Offering Interior Design Jobs In Australia
Once you know that, it’s time to research what field you’d like to work in. There are many things that go beyond the obvious side of designing the homes of the rich – such as designing corporate spaces, bars, pubs and clubs, showrooms, hotels, styling for interior related brands, working on blogs, magazines… the list goes on.
Don’t keep all your hard work to yourself – create a portrait so you can see it. And it doesn’t have to be a synthetic force in the traditional sense. This is very easy to do as blogs and Instagram are perfect online forums. Build your portfolio that includes your best work – don’t worry, it doesn’t have to be perfect to begin with. You will begin to see yourself learning, growing and improving.
In my experience, you need a lot of time to build an attractive blog (although it’s possible because I’ve seen other people build huge followings very quickly), but something like Instagram is very easy – just a nice line of well-designed/styled spaces. Take a look and share your thoughts with others.
Once you’ve created a “bundle” of work, share it. Connect with people who can really help you get where you want to go. Instagram has an amazing network and intimate community where you can easily become friends with people in the industry.
Cybersecurity Jobs: Entry Level And Beyond
I’m a big fan of what I like to call adult work experience – where you offer your services for free in exchange for time within a company.
If you have the means to do it for even a few days, it would be helpful to not only provide you with information about the industry, but also ensure that you get in touch and maybe even make an offer.
Give the company a strong reason to give you the opportunity for work experience. Businesses are usually busy places with little time to babysit, so tell them what you can do. Don’t think you’re going to go in there and start designing – maybe you’ll order fabric samples or something like that, but do it well and efficiently and you might get noticed.
This method may not be the fastest way to get a job in interior design, but it’s a strong starting point. Maybe you’ve learned enough about the topic to know what you’re going to do to teach it, or maybe you already do and need an edge to focus on.

Best Interior Design Schools In The Us
Every online interior design job has its own set of requirements, even if you are working from home. That means they have a foundation. As a web interior designer, you must have a brief, come up with a concept, and create sketches and renderings. Apart from these, three other factors play a role in the company’s selection process.
Virtual interior designer jobs require the same formal education as their traditional counterparts. Prerequisites may vary from company to company, but a Diploma in Interior Design is the minimum. Of course, if you want to earn more, an interior design degree will get you even further.
You can also improve your chances of landing your dream job by getting a qualification from an accredited institution. The Interior Design Accreditation Council accredits schools that teach the necessary fundamentals.
Whether in-person or remote, interior designer jobs pay based on experience level. The more the better. Still, some web design companies do not require experience. In fact, working with a web design company is beneficial for beginners and industry experts alike.
