These tips come directly from small bedrooms I’ve designed for clients, and a small bedroom I personally have at home that I put a queen bed in. Here are the truth bombs…

Upholstered Custom Fabric King Size Bed

As I said above, I have a queen bed in the master bedroom of my apartment, and it doesn’t take up much of the room at all. So yes, a large bed in a small room is an absolute possibility.

But it only works if you take the time to find the right bed frame, at the right height and width, and pair it with the right mattress.

You also need to get the headboard right and make sure it’s paired with the right nightstands so the whole room feels as spacious as it can be. Scroll through for more on how to do this in your bedroom.

I recently read an ad in a magazine where the editor said how trundle beds are fantastic for small rooms. It’s fair to say my blood started to boil immediately. Getting paid by a brand to spread misinformation = one interior designer tagged here.

King Vs Queen Size Bed: A Comparison Guide

Most storage beds like these are notoriously tall. They must be to allow the gas lift mechanism or storage drawers to be located underneath. And then when you put a thick mattress on top, it’s red, it’s game over.

High beds in small rooms (especially high frames for large double beds) will dominate the room so much. Please, I beg you, don’t be tempted to buy a loft bed for your small bedroom.

Another common (but wrong) theory when it comes to large beds in small bedrooms is the idea that it is wise to get a bed base and put a mattress on top.

An ensemble of king beds in small bedrooms seem to grow out of the ground. They look boxy and restrict airflow underneath. Add a duvet cover on top that sweeps down the sides and cuts into the room even more. Avoid at all costs.

The best double bed for a small bedroom is a bed that is low to the ground, yet slightly raised from the floor. If it’s on thin legs, even better.

You want that feeling of seeing the carpet or hard floor underneath. It tricks the eye and makes the room look bigger.

Beds that come in and appear to float (like the Joseph bed above from Castlereagh, which I own) are also amazing options.

The ability to tuck your doona under the mattress also creates a cleaner look, which equals less visual bulk and actually makes your small bedroom feel larger.

Simple Ways To Keep Two Twin Beds Together: 7 Steps

When trying to figure out if you can fit a king-sized bed into a small bedroom, people often Google the width of the mattress, but not the bed frame itself. This is a rookie mistake!

Some bed frames have thick edges that extend along both sides and at the end. You know, like a platform to put your feet on when you sit down to get out of bed in the morning.

King beds with these ledges are not great in a small bedroom. It can add up to 20 cm of width to the bed, which ultimately limits the space you have to walk around the bed on either side.

It is desirable to have a French bed frame with a low headboard in a small bedroom. It’s all about reducing what we in the design business call “visual clutter.”

Ideal Art Size Above King Bed And Favourite Bedroom Prints

In a small room, a tall headboard (especially one with details like buttons or ornate shapes) can overwhelm the room. You want your eye to slide across the bed and pick up the sheets from above, not feel like the headboard is coming for you.

If you’re in love with a French bed with a higher headboard, just make sure the details are minimal (for example, a few vertical lines in the fabric are fine).

Another rookie mistake people always make when considering a king size bed for a small bedroom is the height of the mattress. If you don’t consider this important factor…

I said above that large storage beds are a no-no in a small bedroom because of how high the frame sits off the floor. The same goes for a bed with a thick mattress; you end up with too much height in the room.

What Size Rug Do You Put Under A King Size Bed?

Ideally, you don’t want the bed frame and mattress to be higher than about 60 cm from the floor. Any more and it will swallow your entire small bedroom. Believe and believe!

Fitting a large double bed into a small bedroom comes down to basic math at the end of the day. If you don’t do some basic calculations, you’re in trouble.

The width of the room, minus the width of the bed frame, divided by two; there is so much width on both sides of the bed to get through.

Anything less than 50cm wide on either side of the bed will not be cute. That might mean stamping your toes, scraping your shins, and cursing a string of four-letter words in the middle of the night as you stumble to the bathroom.

As a final point, in terms of making your small bedroom feel larger when your large bed is in the room, consider round nightstands.

Not only does reducing sharp edges greatly help avoid injuries, but if you choose a table with a round top and thin legs, it gives the feeling of air moving through the furniture.

The feeling of air moving through the furniture is one of the best ways to make any small room feel bigger. You want less bulk, fewer items that go all the way to the floor, but more pieces raised on thin legs.
