Afeni, who died of a heart attack in 2016, was the mother of influential Black Cat party member and rap icon Tupac Shakur. Now, it will be the subject of a new film titled “Peace, Love and Respect: The Afeni Shakur/Panther 21 Story.”
The film, first reported by Variety , spans two years from 1969 to 1971 and ends with the birth of Tupac after Afeni and 20 other Black Cats are arrested for a conspiracy.

Jamal Joseph — one of the Panther 21 who was arrested with Afeni — will executive produce with Jasmine Guy, who wrote Afeni’s 2005 biography. Dina LaPolt, who has worked closely with the property, will serve as executive producer.
“My mom was part of the civil rights movement,” LaPolt told Variety. “He taught me about Afeni and how he was arrested as a member of Cat 21.”
“At the start of the trial, Afeni was pregnant while out on bail,” Lapolt continued. “Two of the cats escaped, the judge was tit-for-tat, and Afeni was imprisoned. She was five months pregnant [with Tupac] and made a move about getting her unborn baby a cup of milk! “He has a lot of self-confidence, and that’s our film — it starts from the day he’s arrested.”
“Wake Me Up When You’re Free” celebrates the life and art of Tupac Shakur. But Tupac’s sister sued the trustees of Shakur’s estate because of internal affairs.

He died of a heart attack at Marin General Hospital decades after the slaying, authorities said Tuesday. He was 69 years old.
Marin Sheriff’s Lt. Doug Pittman said at a Tuesday morning news conference that Shakur was on a Sausalito houseboat at Cappas Marina West Pier with a family member and a family member when he began to feel physically unwell Monday night. Born Alice Faye Williams, Shakur changed her name in the 1960s after becoming involved in political activism and joining the Black Cat movement. By 1971, she was pregnant and behind bars, accused of bombing New York landmarks.

The charges, he said, were made in 1968 after the raccoon took over the school to make a point about continuing to educate children during a teachers’ strike.
Recalling the case years later, they were charged with murder and arson, bombing the Bronx Botanical Gardens and Abercrombie & Fitch and Macy’s department stores, and even police stations. All charges were eventually dismissed and the son was born shortly after his release from prison.
He named him Tupac Amaru after the last Incan emperor who led the rebellion and refused to surrender to the Spanish conquistadors.
When Afeni Shakur bounced from New York City to Baltimore, California, she struggled with drug addiction and being a single mother. Still, he enrolled Tupac Shakur in art schools and other programs, where he honed the musical and acting skills that would make him a hip-hop icon.

The family lived in Marin for a while, and Tupac attended Tamalpais High School in Mill Valley.
“Art can save children, no matter what’s going on at home,” he told The Associated Press in a 2005 interview. “I couldn’t do the right thing for my son. “If it wasn’t for art, my child would be lost.”
But Afeni Shakur left a deep impression on his son, helping to shape the worldview that would later set him apart from other young rappers, whose songs reflected his own rebellious stance on racism, poverty, violence and other social issues.
For his part, Tupac Shakur paid tribute to his mother, praising her in his 1995 hit “Dear Mama,” which many fans took to Twitter and posted on Tuesday.
Why That ‘tupac Lives’ Conspiracy Refuses To Die
“You appreciate it,” he says. “Not a woman to replace my mother.”
The rapper made headlines in 1992 when his neighborhood got involved in a fight that left a 6-year-old boy dead at a Marin City festival. Kaid Walker-Chai, of Marin, was among the crowd at the city’s 50th anniversary celebration when he was struck in the head by a bullet fired during a fight between Shakur’s entourage and a group of Marin residents. Kahid’s killer has never been identified.
Tupac Shakur died a few years later in 1996 at the age of 25 in an unsolved drive-by accident. Conspiracies about his killers flourished. His mother thought they were a waste of time.
“We decided to deal with the living. That’s justice for me. He said in 2005, “I have to do what God has given me, and I’m not trying to find out who Tupac killed.”

For the last 20 years of his life, Afeni Shakur focused on preserving his son’s legacy while managing his music catalog.
He opened the Tupac Amaru Shakur Center for the Arts in Georgia – a project to help at-risk youth who are now stuck.
He also produced the Broadway musical “Holler If Ya Me Me,” which used his songs “Me Against the World,” “California Love” and “Ya Keep Your Head” to tell an original story by Todd Kreidler. About two young people dealing with life and tragedy in an industrial Midwestern town. In 2014, it was quickly closed after playing just 38 games.
And he’s an executive producer on Tupac Shakur’s biopic, All Eyes On Me, set for release in the fall, starring Demetrius Shipp as his youngest son.
