How Many Years Did It Take To Build The Ark – Located in Agra, India, the Taj Mahal is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most iconic buildings in the world (via Britannica). Despite its grand appearance, the Taj Mahal is actually a mausoleum. According to ThoughtCo., it was commissioned by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan for his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. As the story goes, Mumtaz Mahal was his third and favorite wife who died giving birth to their 14th child. The emperor is said to have wept for eight days, and in his grief, decided to build a mausoleum in his memory.
Per History, construction began in 1632. No expense was spared, as the Mughal empire was extremely wealthy. As a result, the Taj Mahal is made of pure white marble and semi-precious stones. Due to obsession and perfection, the Taj Mahal would not be completed for another two decades.

The tomb in the center stands 81 feet high, and the garden, rather than surrounding it, leads into the tomb. With perfect symmetry and the use of white marble and red sandstone, the complexity is extraordinary. The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco is one of the most famous bridges in the world. This iconic bridge spans 1.7 miles and connects San Francisco to Marin County. When it was completed in 1937, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world and was considered an engineering marvel. Despite its orange color, the building is named after the Golden Gate Bridge. It takes its name from the Golden Gate Strait, the stretch of water under the bridge that connects the Pacific Ocean to San Francisco Bay.

Originally the creators intended to paint the bridge blue and yellow to make it easily visible in the San Francisco fog. However, when the Golden Gate Bridge was painted orange with primer, it was decided that orange would be easier on the eyes and more attractive. So, the orange is stuck. Gold would be beautiful, but impractical. The bridge’s official color is international orange.
Building the Golden Gate Bridge is no small feat. The fog and slippery steel beams made building the bridge extremely dangerous. A safety net was installed under the bridge, which saved the lives of 19 workers, in what became known as the Half Way to Hell Club. Despite these safety precautions, 11 builders were sadly not so lucky and died during the construction of the landmark bridge.

The Golden Gate Strait presents many challenges due to strong tides, wind and fog, not to mention its proximity to the San Andreas Fault. It was estimated to have cost over $100 million to build until structural engineer, Joseph Strauss, took on the project. As chief engineer, he was able to build the Golden Gate Bridge for between $27 and $35 million (depending on the source). That’s a lot less than others had originally projected, but in today’s dollars, it would be $1.5 billion!
