Paul Baker, a recently retired entomologist at the University of Arizona, is an expert on termites. He said homeowners shouldn’t panic if they spot signs of termite activity, but they should get the problem under control.

“One thing to remember is that termites work very slowly,” Baker said. “If they have a termite tube on the outside of the stem wall, a lot of people will panic and say, ‘I’ve got to get somebody out here and get started tomorrow.’
“Get two or three bids, and if it takes three weeks or a month, you’ll be fine. They’re not going to do that much damage in three weeks or a month. Most people don’t know that.”

“Like all organisms, when it gets over 100 (degrees), they’re not interested in doing a lot of feeding. But the problem is more moisture. They can’t move around without moisture. That’s where the monsoon comes in. It becomes more an active time because of the humidity. The most active time is probably mid-September to November, December, after the (monsoon) humidity has come in and the temperatures have dropped.”

“The normal process is that you have an inspection at least once a year. Some people will go around the house every three months looking for mud pipes. When they find the pipes, they call someone and they do either a spot treatment or a full treatment.”
“You’re buying the service, not just the initial service, but repeat services. You want to make sure they’re going to be available in three or five years, so you didn’t waste your money. Some people like the big (companies), Really Nolen, Orkin. People know they’re going to be around. Some like to do things locally. They’re going to hire a one-man shop or a two-man team, something like that. It’s a personal preference. There’s a lot of good companies in both segments.
“Another factor is cost. One company can do it for $1,400, company X will do it for $800, another company says they can do it for $100 a year. You have to ask, ‘What do I get for it ?’ The key is what kind of (pesticides) are they using and if you call them, will they be there?”
“There are three strikes against doing that, I say. First, you can’t buy the materials. You’re not licensed to buy them.

“If you got them, let’s say your neighbor was licensed, they bought the material and gave it to you, you don’t have the equipment (to use the chemicals).
“Third, you go ahead and treat your house, and six months later you sell it. You have to disclose that it was treated by you. So let’s say someone comes in and has a baby. Six months after they buy the house , the baby gets sick. They can come after you and say you messed up the house because you didn’t know what you were doing. They want to sue and now you’re in hot water.
“You can use natural products. I’m not against natural products, they just don’t last. And again, you probably don’t have the equipment to use them.”
