How To Make Pepperoni Stromboli

Once you make pepperoni stromboli for the first time, you’ll be amazed at how easy and fun it is.

Easy Pepperoni Stromboli Recipe (with Homemade Dough)

Both calzones and strombolis are delicious baked pastries, the main difference between them is actually the way they are folded and sealed. Think of a calzone as a taco and a stromboli as a burrito. While the calzones are folded into half circles, the pepperoni and cheese stromboli recipe in this cooking demonstration is rolled. You go jelly roll or cinnamon roll style with stromboli.

While any pepperoni will work, here’s a tip—instead of using the mini pepperoni slices marketed as pizza toppings, try the largest, thickest slices you can buy at the deli counter. Meat you can sink your teeth into is the order of the day here.

Maybe your stromboli wasn’t cooked enough, or maybe you were a little too enthusiastic when putting on the filling and sauce. Although a generous filling of stromboli is delicious, moderation is best!

Serve your pepperoni stromboli with a make-ahead Mexican salad or a caprese cucumber tomato salad. It’s also delicious with a simple tomato and cucumber salad—the fresh simplicity of the salad offsets the rich flavors of the pepperoni stromboli.

Stromboli is similar to a calzone, but without the ricotta cheese or sauce. It is an offshoot of pizza, although it is an American creation, not Italian. It is believed to have been created by Italian American immigrants and named after a movie.

We used pizza dough from the store. It was easy and accessible and saved us time. If you have a killer pizza dough recipe, go for it!

Roll that dough into a long rectangle, then add some mozzarella cheese in the middle. Place your pepperoni on top. It’s very classic pizza flavors.

Then paint the rest of the exposed dough with freshly squeezed garlic butter! It adds great flavor- garlic butter makes everything better!

Best Pepperoni Stromboli Recipe (only 7 Ingredients And Easy!)

Cut the opening into strips on both sides, then fold the strips into the pepperoni and cheese. I prefer this method for rolling because it ensures that the dough is fully cooked.

Once all the dough is folded, bake it! Feel free to brush on a little more garlic butter when it comes out of the oven!

Wait a few minutes before cutting, or the cheese will ooze out. Marinara sauce or some garlic butter for dipping!

We offer road shows that demonstrate the versatility and many uses of Chef Shami Gourmet Butters. From savory dishes to sweet deserts, our butters are the perfect addition to any meal. Fill this homemade stromboli with your favorite meats and/or cheeses like pepperoni, ham, prosciutto, provolone, and mozzarella. I make this with my homemade pizza dough, a simple 6-ingredient dough that stays soft on the inside and develops a wonderfully crispy crust. Only 1 rise is required, which gives you enough time to prepare any fillings. Stromboli makes a wonderful meal and works well as an appetizer or game day snack.

How To Make Stromboli (pepperoni Stromboli Recipe)

You can make 1 stromboli using 1 pound of store-bought or homemade pizza dough. Although store-bought dough is convenient, I encourage you to try this homemade dough. It requires 6 basic ingredients and about 60-90 minutes of rice time.

1 All-purpose dough that works in a variety of ways is handy; You will appreciate its simplicity and versatility. I use this exact dough for ham & cheese pockets and pepperoni pizza rolls.

The options are endless. If it works as a pizza topping, it works as a stromboli filling. You really can’t go wrong because if you use too much filling, you won’t be able to roll the dough.

Add pizza sauce? You can add pizza / marinara / tomato sauce to the filling. Skip the melted butter and garlic (or don’t care) and spread 1/2 cup sauce over each rolled dough before layering on the meats and cheeses in step 6.

Easy And Cheesy Pepperoni Stromboli Recipe

After you have punched the dough, divide it in half to make 2 strombolis. Half can be frozen for another time if desired.

Sprinkle with fresh parsley or desired herbs, then layer over meat and cheese, leaving a 3-inch gap at the top and a 1-inch gap around the edges. Brush the edges with egg wash, this helps keep everything sealed.

Brush with egg wash, coarse salt, pepper, more spinach, or sprinkle with a little cheese. (Toppings are optional.) Cut 3-4 slits in the top to allow air to escape.

Bake until golden brown, then cool for 5 minutes. It’s flaky and crisp when warm—absolutely irresistible. Great for dipping pizza or marinara sauce! If you’ve ever wanted to try a homemade sauce, we really like Beth’s Homemade Pizza Sauce.

Easy Stromboli Recipe

Finally, here’s a quick explanation if you’re interested. Stromboli and calzone are not the same, although they can be prepared with the same ingredients. The difference is their shape. Stromboli originated in Philadelphia by restaurant owner Nassereno Romano, rolled up like a cinnamon roll, baked and sliced into 1 long log. Italian calzones that originated in Naples are folded in half into a semi-circle or crescent shape, then baked and served individually. Both can be filled with the same ingredients, although a calzone usually includes ricotta (a little wetter for stromboli), and both are usually brushed with an egg wash to help seal the edges and give it a golden crust. Much love to you both!
