I’m sure most readers know what a syllable is because many of my readers are educators. But for those who do not, I will explain.

A syllable is a piece of uninterrupted sound that is formed by opening and closing the mouth to form a vowel. It consists of one or more letters with a vowel sound. That means we hear one vowel in every syllable.
As you can see, it is not as simple as defining a vowel in a word and using numbers, because sometimes 2 vowels make 1 sound like in a word.
To count syllables, you may have done that by placing your hand under your chin to count how many times your mouth opens when you say a word. It works because your mouth must be open when making vowel sounds. But I find it more accurate to utter words and count words.

I also give my students a mirror so they can see the shape of their mouth when pronouncing the vowel compared to the letter. They can easily see the image of their mouth opening to form a vowel sound, which is the part we count for syllables.
So when we know what a syllable is and how to count it, you may be wondering why. Anyone need to know this word?
When I went to elementary school in the 90s, syllables were not taught. I have never learned any spelling or phonetic rules, but I have a good memory and I do the internal spelling rules through demonstrations.

But if you or your students, like most people, are wondering about the English spelling rules that “make no sense!” But that is not normal. There are many rules that govern how we read and spell, and not as many exceptions as most people think.
Syllable rules are important to know for spelling and decoding and are important in teaching students who struggle to read or spell.
Knowing different syllable patterns and how to break words into syllables helps students decode and spell words correctly. They can guess which vowel will form and break a long word into smaller pieces for easier reading.
The closing syllable ends literally. The last vowel before the last letter has a short vowel. Examples include:

This is the first syllable type that is usually taught in the first grade. At this point, students clearly understand closing syllables such as CVC.
The opening syllable should be taught along with or after the closing syllable. Just as students are familiar with closing syllables in first grade, they also know many open syllables, such as
This syllable should be taught after students know the short and long vowel sounds and the closing and opening syllables. It would be a nice change to get out of the closing syllable to VCE by adding a quiet e to the word CVC.
This should be taught after the opening and closing syllables and VCE. The first and second classes are usually when the syllable is taught and practiced.

The diphthong syllable usually consists of two contiguous vowels that sound together. This creates a special sound; Examples include:
This syllable is also known as a vowel group. This is taught starting from the first grade, but there are some tricks that can be left for the second grade.
This is the last syllable to be taught when students have mastered the other 5 skills, usually in the second grade.

Phonetic awareness is “the ability to recognize and organize the sounds of spoken language.” But where does the syllable fit under that umbrella? Syllable counting is an important set of words, along with phonetic, phonetic, and phonetic comprehension. In fact, it is one of the seven skills that children need when learning to read.
Recent studies through Scientific Reports have found that teaching syllables first, even before teaching the alphabet of the alphabet, leads to “an increase in phonetic comprehension in a letter-to-syllable group rather than a letter-to-syllable group.” This study suggests that teaching readers in advance the letter-to-syllable correspondence is the key to successful reading.

Counting Syllables In Words
Decoding syllables is easier than pronunciation. On the other hand, we are teaching children to listen to large parts of words so that through practice they can also learn small parts of words.
When children learn how to break words into syllables, they are practicing the skills of mixing and dividing. They can then use those skills to categorize each sound. For example, the teacher says the word ‘marker’ by saying ‘marker’ and asks students to mix the syllables to form the word ‘marker’.
Practicing syllables also teaches young children to use syllables to decode longer words. For example, if students do not know the word “sight”, they can look at it and identify the word “sight”. By decoding “see” as the first syllable, it is easier to identify unknown words. Finding pieces in words makes learning to read easier.
As children begin to write, counting syllables in words to break them down into smaller parts helps children become more confident and successful writers.
