Every year, fundraisers for the Memphis hospital send hundreds of millions of letters, many of which contain heartbreaking photos of children battling cancer who have gone bald. Celebrities such as Jennifer Aniston and Sofia Vergara praise the hospital in television commercials. This year, St. Jude’s fundraising reached outer space. In September, the SpaceX Inspiration4 mission included a former St. Jude patient as a crew member.

But for many families, St. Jude treatment does not relieve them of all the financial burdens of caring for their children, including housing, travel and food expenses that fall outside the strict confines of the hospital, a study has found.

“This is often a huge relief to families who often expect to sell all their possessions just to get their children the medical care and treatment they need to save their lives,” the hospital’s lawyers wrote. “St. Jude and ALSAC understand that this arrangement cannot cover all financial obligations of all families, and neither St. Jude nor ALSAC can protect families from all financial and emotional impacts of a child’s illness.
St. Jude said it discloses the limits of its assistance to families on its website and in materials provided to those whose children are hospitalized. This includes the rule that Burt ran into that the hospital only covers travel and lodging expenses for one nurse and one patient. For many families, the daily food budget is limited to $50. In some cases, hotel accommodations are only provided if families travel more than 500 miles to get to St. Jude.

They point to the Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation, which awards more than $2.5 million annually in grants to thousands of families of pediatric cancer patients at hospitals across the country to cover rent, utilities and other emergency expenses.

Foundation founder and president Joe McDonough said St. Jude families face the same financial problems as families of patients at other children’s hospitals, though he said St. Jude’s marketing creates the public perception that it alleviates those burdens.
“People say to me, ‘Why are you helping St. Jude families?'” McDonough said. “Well, what happens when a family lives in Augusta, Georgia, and they’re being treated at St. Jude? They still have to pay rent on their apartment in Augusta, Georgia. They still have to pay off their car. And I can’t say whether St. Jude should pay all those expenses or not. I’m just explaining that it’s not a completely free ride.”
After receiving its report’s findings from St. Jude, the hospital announced a dramatic increase in assistance to parents and other relatives during their children’s care in Memphis.
