Take My Hand Precious Lord – This hymn was written by gospel composer Thomas A. Dorsey (1899–1993) was born out of a terrible tragedy in his life. In an interview for the album
I left early one morning to go to St. Louis for revival work. I left my wife asleep in bed, got into the car, and I drove along. She was about to become a mother, and I expected great happiness and great joy when I returned. But I got to St. Louis, and the second night at the meeting a telegram boy came and brought me a telegram. I opened it and it said, “Your wife is dead. Come home.” I could not complete the meeting. Finally, the next morning when I got home to Chicago, I found it all true, they never moved the body. It chilled me and killed me; I wanted to get back to the blues. But after I put my wife and the baby in a box, I went to old Poro College, and in the music room there, and Mr. [Theodore] Fry and I were just going through the keys and looking up words like something. water droplets seemed to be streaming from the crack in the rock above. With me at the piano: “Dear God, take my hand, lead me, let me stand; I’m tired, I’m weak, I’m worn out. Through the storm, lead me to the light in the night. Take my hand, dear Lord, lead me home.”

Dorsey’s wife, Nettie Harper, died on August 26, 1932. Dorsey began his career as a blues musician, but in the 1920s turned his attention to gospel music, thus becoming a reference to a return to the blues. The song was not copyrighted until 1938, when it was published by Thomas Dorsey’s own company as sheet music (Figure 1), consisting of three verses. The original setting is for solo voice and piano/organ.
(1980), he used two additional stanzas: “Precious Lord, I Love Thy Name” and “Dear Lord, I Humbly Bow.” These additional words are not well known and are not often spoken, but the first of them is found in hymnals, e.g
“Dear Lord” was recorded by the Heavenly Gospel Singers (Roosevelt Fenoy, Fred Whitmore, Henderson Massey and Jimmy Bryant) on February 16, 1937 in Charlotte, North Carolina for the Bluebird (B6846). This was reissued by Document Records
, Volume 2 (DOCD 5453, 1997). It was then recorded by Singer Evangelist Charles Beck for Decca Records (7320) in New York on May 8, 1937. The song was very popular; It was recorded 16 times between 1937 and 1942.

Dorsey himself worked primarily as a composer, choir director, accompanist, and talent developer, so recordings of his singing are rare, especially in the early years of his career. One of the earliest notable recordings was by Mahalia Jackson, accompanied by Dorsey, recorded on March 27, 1956 in New York and released on Columbia Records.
(CL-899). In 1973, Dorsey recorded another version, with Marion Williams playing the piano behind him, giving a spoken introduction.

The following year, on August 1-7, 1981, a song for the documentary was performed at the 48th National Convention of Gospel Choirs and Choirs at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Dorsey, Houston, Texas.

(1844), but there is no music in Allen’s collection, and Allen is not known to have been a composer of hymn tunes. Allen did not write this tune; before his involvement became associated with Dorsey’s text, MAITLAND was involved in the adaptation of the oft-set text Jesus Must Bear the Cross Alone.
(NY: A.S. Barnes & Co., 1855 | Fig. 2). In this print, the tune was called CROSS AND CROWN, titled “A Western Tune” and set to “Jesus must bear the cross alone,” with the lyrics attributed to Allen.
