How the food intolerance test works is that it measures the reaction of immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies to foods. Jojo Alejandrino, Head of Partnerships of Global Medical Technologies Manila, Inc. explains, “Results are displayed through a ‘traffic light’ display system. These are quantitative levels of IGg proteins in the blood of patients. The higher the number, the more sensitive the patient is to that food. As this is an elimination diet recommendation, it is advisable to completely avoid red zone foods for 3 to 6 months. Also, rotate and replace the foods in the yellow zone so that their level can decrease. Finally, the patient can freely eat all foods in the green zone while still trying moderation.”
I broke out in hives on a trip to Japan recently and made an appointment to see an allergist when I got back. I brought my food intolerance test results with me and my doctor immediately said, “Don’t believe that – it doesn’t work!” It puzzled me. But that’s why some doctors may advise you otherwise, explained Hi-Precision’s Melissa Ongsue-Lee: “Food intolerance is a health test. It cannot be used for food allergies. The gut is the body’s primary function, and a leek gut means nutrients aren’t being absorbed by the body.” Allergic testes measure immunoglobulin E (IGe) antibodies. “The IGe antibody is the classic allergy where symptoms appear immediately (swelling of the lips, swelling of the face, even anaphylactic shock or death),” explains Alejandrino. “Normally, people with IGe antibodies already know what foods they are allergic to since childhood.
For IGg antibodies, these are the chronic symptoms that people may experience from eating foods to which they are intolerant or sensitive. It is not life threatening. It occurs 1 to 3 days after ingesting the offending food. Therefore, it is very difficult to diagnose because people eat many types of food every day. This is what our FIT detects.

I intentionally waited a few months after taking the test before writing the blog post because I wanted to see the results. I think the test checked a few of the things I suspected I was intolerant to – gluten and milk in particular – but I’m still noticing all the others that were listed in my red zone, for example.
