What Material Is Spanx Made Of – We know and love our SPANX shapewear. When it comes to shaping technology that seeks to solve everyday clothing dilemmas, Spanx is DeBrin’s most used brand. Available in a variety of shapes, styles and sizes, Spanx has become so popular that it is the market leader among women around the world. Believe it or not, Spanx was founded by Sara Blakely when she was getting ready for a party and realized she needed proper underwear that would provide a smooth look underneath her clothes. She started the Spanx revolution by cutting off the legs of her control panty tops, and that’s where the Spanx brand came into being.
The material of Spanx shapewear is a mixture of nylon and elastin. This blend of these two fabrics depends on the compression level of each garment, and Spanx has three different levels of compression.

Buy the right size for your body shape and size. This is an area where people need to improve when purchasing Spanx. Trying to squeeze into a smaller size won’t make you look smaller, and it’ll probably give you bumps and lumps where they shouldn’t be, and we’re guessing you’ll want to rip it off at the first opportunity. Spanx should make the occasion comfortable with increased confidence, not miserable. Wear YOUR size and let shapewear do the work for you.

You are about to discover the magic of shapewear. When we think of shapewear, we think of an iron that smooths out every bump – sort of like photoshop for living human beings. Sara Blakely (founder of Spanx) didn’t become the world’s youngest billionaire for no good reason. So when you’re thinking about your next shapewear purchase, here are some tips from DeBri’s team.

THIS is a blog post I wish I had read years ago. As an avid online shopper and fashion sleuth, I’ve long seen IG bloggers raving about Spanx faux leather leggings. They were a staple piece that seemed to be included in many of their outfit posts. Sure, they looked cute, but were they even comfortable or worth the nearly three-figure price tag?
Because of the price and the fact that Spanx always seemed to sell out when it was most talked about (N-sale), I never pulled the trigger and bought a pair. And then, one day, Aerie came out with their own version:
Spanx Vs Aerie Crackle Leggings Review
To my untrained eye, they looked identical. And the price was much more realistic for my budget at the time. I ordered them immediately. When they arrived, I felt dizzy when I put them on. They were so comfortable! The inner fabric was so soft that the outer faux leather just made me want to keep touching it. I loved them! They were a big hit with others as well. As soon as they were released, they would often sell out. As time went on, Aerie even added a matching sports bra and bike pants (which I grabbed just as quickly) and offered other colors like navy and olive.
Fits the OG Spanx version. And it was hard to find an answer to that on the internet. All the bloggers and influencers shared both things, but they all wore the Spanx version. I was wondering if they actually tried Aerie or if they are just sharing their ordered links to everyone. It remained a question that floated in my obsessive brain.
But this year I actually bought a pair of Spanx tights during the N-sale that I had to buy early! I pulled the trigger since they were on sale and I knew Nordstrom had an amazing return policy. I thought I would find them so similar that I would return them anyway. But first I would document my analysis well for others! So here goes:
On the front, the main difference is the stitching. Spanx tights have a straight front with no seams, while Aerie tights have a seam that runs from the waistband to the crotch. One could argue that the Spanx design is less likely to cause the dreaded CT.

From the rear, there are a few notable differences. A pair of Spanx has a recessed waistband on the back; it doesn’t go straight across. Also, the seam on the lower part of the belt goes straight across. On the Aerie pair, it’s the exact opposite: the waistband material goes straight across, while the seams have a more rounded, recessed shape.
Up close, this photo shows the look and texture of both pairs. A pair of Spanx has a finer texture, which, if you look at the material from a distance, gives a tighter, flatter finish. The Aerie pair, true to its name, has a more ‘cracked’ texture. From a distance, it gives a slightly glossier finish than faux leather. In terms of color, it’s almost like matte vs. satin.
Inside, the Spanx material is silky, almost cool to the touch. The Aerie material folds and continues in the inner part of the belt, but then also the leg part, the material is soft, almost like fleece. Although both are very different in this regard, they both maintain a very luxurious, comfortable feel.
Here’s another front view, a little further away, where you can see some differences in the way the material plays with the lighting. You can see that the Spanx pair reflects a more matte look. This mimics the rubberier feel of the material. Aerie pair has a little less compression compared to Spanx.

From the back, it almost looks like the Spanx photo has a soft filter on compared to the Aerie photo, but I assure you, it doesn’t. Both photos are in focus. You can just see the differences in the material and how they reflect light. The differences in the stitching on the back also seem to produce different results in the design of the cover. I find a pair of Spanx to be more forgiving of any lumps or bumps or a banana ring, but have a slight flattening effect, while a pair of Aerie, with their shaped, rounded seams and reflective material, gives a slightly elevated, rounded look, pop.
Oh, I almost forgot the lengths and size! Spanx offers sizes from XS-XL in regular and petite. Aerie offers sizes XXS-XXL, with XS-XL coming in short, regular and long lengths (regular XXS and XXL only). I wear both sizes small, regular. I’m 5’5″ tall and have a small pile on the bottom of both.
In conclusion, I am absolutely keeping my new Spanx tights. Although the two pairs are very similar in appearance, I feel that the differences make it worth having both. The Spanx retails for $98 and the Aerie retails for $54.95 (at the time of posting) and I’ve seen both on sale. Aerie’s website currently lists them at 60% off $21.98, for example. Nordstrom’s prices are back to normal, but we saw the prices stay the same when the Spanx site put them on sale all year. I think N-Sale had the lowest price, but the Spanx sale is pretty close.
UPDATE: Aerie has changed the style of her crackle leggings to a criss-cross waist. I have updated the link to the new style as they discontinued the original waist style shown in my photos. I think the criss-cross waist looks super flattering. If anyone has any, be sure to leave me a comment and let me know what you think of them. xoxox
