What Material Is Under Armour Made Of – With sumptuous textiles, detailed lacquering and forged steel components, a suit of samurai armor is an extraordinarily complex construction of craftsmanship and beauty.
Microscopy allowed conservators to identify fibers on various components of the armour; red silk is shown above.

The peeling areas on this mempo (face mask) were secured using a syringe to inject glue between the layers.
Multiple layers of toned Japanese tengujo paper are used to fill a loss in the printed leather strips on the haidate (thigh guards).
Textile conservator Denise Migdail makes a custom shape using heavily starched cotton constructed in layers; once dry, the rigid form is cut to a precise shape. After adding the liner and a black wrap, the new shape is attached to the mount.
The Asian Art Museum is fortunate to own several samurai armors from the Meiji period. These elegant costumes were meant to celebrate aesthetic ideals in addition to military might. The assembled parts, traditionally displayed on a wooden stand, together create a stunning visual impact that attracts museum visitors of all ages. Despite the underlying steel, some parts of a suit of armor are surprisingly fragile. Silk and wool lace, ornamental tassels and silver brocades are easily damaged by light. To best protect these organic materials from fading and damage, armor components are rotated in galleries for months at a time. The other suits “rest” in dark storage until the next tournament comes around. In the spring of 2011, the installation of a set of

Type armor (B83M12) provided an opportunity for thorough conservation, research and preventive care. Each component of the armor was examined, materials were identified, and conservation treatments were performed to stabilize the artifacts for the proposed display. Finally, a custom mount was constructed and the newly preserved armor was installed under controlled lighting in the Japanese art galleries on the second floor.
Japanese samurai armor is usually made up of many small parts and a wide variety of materials. Steel, leather, and wood typically make up the guard plate, which can be made up of many small sections paired together using leather or silk cord. Lacquer is then applied over the parts to hide the construction under a smooth, glossy surface. Leg and arm guards can be made of chain or plating, sewn onto richly decorated silk and leather. The addition of finely crafted details such as monograms, fasteners and trims, often in gold and contrasting colors, makes the entire suit a luxurious fashion statement as well as effective protection.
This X-ray image reveals the hundreds of small metal plates that make up the case, or body section. The plates are linked together in an overlapping pattern, providing strength and flexible movement to the wearer.
Exposing these costumes correctly can be difficult because materials such as silk, steel and lacquer have very different chemical structures and respond to very different environments. After a few centuries, the once strong silk laces may no longer be able to support the weight of the heavy steel plates. Lacquered parts can be bent, cracked or flaked, and steel parts can be rusted. Each material requires special attention and any treatment must consider all surrounding materials as well as the overall function and appearance of the armor. A conservation treatment always begins with careful examination, identification of materials and documentation before any changes are proposed. Because each case is unique, the steps in the image are chosen to illustrate interesting examples rather than a step-by-step treatment. This is not intended as a teaching tool or instruction. The armor is delicate and easily damaged – home treatment is not recommended. Always consult a professional for advice on caring for your precious art and artifacts.

The suneats (shin guards) shown here are made of fine steel links, sewn onto a padded backing. Repairs to the silk tie straps were made using invisible patches of “hair” silk and cotton.
Whenever possible, conservators choose reversible, age-tested materials that will complement and work with the originals. Below, strips of leather printed on
(thigh guards) are repaired to prevent further damage. Small pieces of handmade long-fiber Japanese paper are inserted as filler and held together with a flexible, inert adhesive. The toned paper is flexible and strong so it can move with the armor without adding bulk.
To support the armor, a traditional Japanese mount was adapted by adding a custom inner shape. The shape was constructed in the conservation department from layers of starched buckram, foam and fabric. All materials are carefully tested before use to ensure they will age safely and harmlessly – with care, this new mount will provide support and protection to your armor for many years to come.

A traditional Japanese armor mount is a set of tiered wooden hangers. The purpose of conservation was to add additional support to the armor without altering this minimalist aesthetic.
Once the conservation treatment is complete, the assembled armor appears to hang freely on a Japanese-style mount. But beneath the simple appearance lies a lot of hard work. As with many conservation treatments, the conservator’s hand is intentionally hidden from view. The ultimate goal of a conservation treatment is to preserve the work without distracting the viewer from the intrinsic beauty of these powerful and elegant works of art.
It takes many hands and many specialists to coordinate the installation of such complex items as this Japanese armor. Textiles Conservator Denise Migdail, Objects Conservator Mark Fenn, Objects Graduate Trainee Elizabeth Saetta, Objects Trainee Jena Hirschbein and Paintings Conservator Shiho Sasaki participated under the supervision of Head of Conservation Katie Holbrow. Also contributing to the success of this new installation were Associate Curator of Japanese Art Melissa Rinne, Mount Designer Vincent Avalos, Photographer Kaz Tsuruta, Lead Preparator Stephen Penkowsky, and Preparators Patrick Crotty and Evan Kierstad.
