Is Barney Fife Still Alive – MOUNT AIRY, N.C. – Betty Lynn, the film and television actress best known for her role as Thelma Lou, Barney Fife’s love interest on “The Andy Griffith Show,” has passed away. She is 95 years old.
Lynn passed away peacefully Saturday after a brief illness, the Andy Griffith Museum in Mount Airy, North Carolina, announced in a statement.

Lynn appeared as Thelma Lou on the show from 1961 to 1966. She reprized her role in the television series Return to Mayberry, in which Thelma Lou and Barney were married.

Born Elizabeth Ann Theresa Lynn on August 29, 1926 in Kansas City, Missouri, Lynn began studying dance and acting as a child. In 1944, she began performing as part of the USO Camp Shows.
Lynn took her talents abroad, performing in the USO for World War II servicemen. She is “supposedly the only American woman to have traversed the perilous Burmese Road during the war,” according to the museum’s statement.
She moved to New York in the late 1940s and began acting in film, then television. Her career spans decades, but fans know her best for her role on “The Andy Griffith Show.”
Director and actor Ron Howard, who plays Opie, the son of Sheriff Andy Taylor, paid tribute to Lynn in a tweet on Sunday saying that she “lights up every scene” her and every day of shooting she is on set.”

Lynn moved from Hollywood to Mount Airy in 2007 after a series of break-ins to her home. She expressed her love for the city to the Associated Press in 2015.
At the time, Lynn said, “I think God has blessed me. “He took me to a sweet town, great people, and just said, ‘Now, that’s for you Betty.’”
The museum said Lynn wrote an autobiography before her death, which is expected to be released after her death.
