If you are not registered with AAA, you can work under the supervision of a registered architect.
In accordance with the Alberta Architects Act [pdf] and the Architects Act General Regulations [pdf], the Alberta Association of Architects (AAA) oversees interior designer certification, which authorizes designers to practice some of the scope of practice defined in the Architects Act and Regulations. If you do not practice or practice as a Licensed Interior Designer, you do not need to register.
Graduates of accredited 4-year degree programs often begin working in interior design firms or architecture firms or in the planning departments of corporations and organizations. Graduates of the 2-year diploma program typically work as assistants for home builders, kitchen and bath manufacturers, flooring companies, or interior design firms or architecture firms. Experience gained in a sales position may not qualify for professional accreditation.
