What Do You Need To Make A Smoothie At Home – Homemade smoothies are a delicious way to add extra fruits and vegetables to your diet. Whether you’re looking for a tasty way to start your day or need a healthy midday snack, knowing how to make smoothies is a great way to expand your culinary knowledge and build confidence in your kitchen.
In short, making a smoothie is as simple as throwing the ingredients into a blender and letting it go to work. Deciding what, and how much, goes into the pitcher is the hard part.

Blend together frozen strawberries and some milk for an easy 2-ingredient strawberry smoothie. Or you can get really complicated and make a 12-ingredient mega smoothie with enough calories to last you all day.

Fruits and vegetables make up the bulk of the smoothie, adding fiber, nutrients and flavor. Fresh or frozen options both work and are often chosen based on personal preference.
Best Fruits for Smoothies: Fruits that are slightly softer make better creamy smoothies. Berries, bananas, cherries, peaches and other stone fruits, avocados, citrus fruits, ripe pears, kiwis and mangoes.
Best vegetables for smoothies: When choosing vegetables for smoothies, if they are not cooked, choose ones that do not have a strong smell and are not too hard or dense. Tomatoes, cucumbers, spinach, collards and other leafy greens are good, as are cooked beets, cooked sweet potatoes and cooked carrots. Not so good are Brussels sprouts, broccoli and raw vegetables.
Pro tip: A smoothie is a great way to create unique champagne cocktails. Mix your favorite smoothie half and half with champagne, cava or prosecco. Enjoy!
Easy Steps To Making A Healthy Smoothie
When it comes to what goes into your smoothie, only you can decide. There are no wrong answers here!
Benefits of fresh fruits and vegetables: This is a great way to use up fruits that are no longer visually appealing, but are still delicious. Browning bananas, soft strawberries, and blackberries drop as they ripen. Everything still tastes good, but it’s not the first thing you pick from the fruit basket on the counter.
Cons of fresh fruits and vegetables: You should make your smoothies at your fruit table, not yours. If those fresh fruits don’t taste good anymore, they won’t make your smoothie taste good. If the fruit is spoiled, it will be difficult to blend and won’t be a smooth smoothie.
Benefits of Frozen Fruits and Vegetables: Frozen (or partially frozen) fruit creates a thick texture that stays cool without compromising flavor. Most frozen fruits are picked at peak ripeness. You can eat summer blackberries in January or tree-ripened peaches in March. Also, unless you’re shopping an in-season market stand, frozen fruit is usually cheaper than fresh.

Disadvantages of frozen fruits and vegetables: If you don’t use a high-powered blender, frozen solid fruit can be more than it can handle. While my Vitamix is fine, my stick blender leaves the frozen fruit chunky. Let the frozen fruit dry on the counter for 10 minutes or so before making your smoothie.
Liquids help puree fruits and vegetables to become thinner, making your blender easier to process and giving you the perfect consistency. You can go very easy (and calorie-free!) with plain water, but the sky’s the limit.
Coconut water adds a subtle flavor, electrolytes, and nutritional boost, making it a good post-workout option. Non-dairy milks like dairy milk or soy milk, almond milk or coconut milk add an extra boost of vitamins and minerals like calcium and vitamin D, some of which provide an extra protein boost. Fruit juice, such as apple, orange or cranberry, can add flavor and a little sweetness to your smoothie, but it can also add unwanted sugar.
Not everyone puts protein on their must-have list, but in my smoothies, it’s an absolute must. Without protein, your smoothie is really just dessert.

Protein helps slow digestion, helping your smoothie keep you fuller for longer. A protein-free breakfast smoothie makes you hungry again in an hour, and it doesn’t fill you up for breakfast.
Options include soft Greek yogurt, nut butters, or milk. Another way to add more protein is through protein powders made with whey, soy, or collagen.
These add-ins are optional because they aren’t necessary to make a delicious, nutritious smoothie. However, they give you room to play with both the nutritional aspects and flavor of your homemade smoothie.
I’m also guilty of looking at a smoothie recipe and throwing everything in the pitcher. I can have a 12-ounce breakfast or a 24-ounce drink to get me through the day. Sometimes, it’s nice to know exactly how much smoothie I’m going to make.

Maybe you’re counting calories. Maybe you don’t want to finish the leftovers. Maybe you don’t have enough to share with your kids. Whatever your reason, sometimes it just makes life easier.
Place the jug on your scale and press the “tare” button to zero it. Add ingredients by squeezing between each one to accurately measure how much goes into the jug. Above all, it’s best not to dirty a measuring cup.
Homemade smoothies are one of the easiest things to make in the kitchen. In fact, there are only five simple steps.
Of all those steps, the last one is the most important. When using fresh fruits and vegetables, they don’t always taste the same. Today’s strawberry smoothie may be sweeter than yesterday’s. The best time to fix it is before it’s on your windshield and you’ve cleaned up the mess.

Most of the questions I get about smoothies are about how to adapt the ingredients you have in your pantry and fridge and/or customize the flavor to suit your own palate. Of all my smoothies, these are the most common.
If you have additional questions, leave them in the comments on this post and I’ll add them.
The smoothest, creamiest smoothie requires a high-powered blender for best results. However, the best tool is in your kitchen. I’ve used a blender, food processor, stick blender, and mini chopper all with varying results and I recommend until you upgrade.

Whether or not a smoothie is good for you depends on your overall diet, what you add to the smoothie, and how often you drink it. Smoothies filled with low-sugar fruits and vegetables can be a healthy part of your diet within your recommended calorie limit.
To make a smoothie dairy-free, substitute your favorite dairy-free milk or yogurt for the recommended dairy-based option recommended in the recipe.
Do they need it? No. Can they benefit? Yes. If you’re using fresh, room-temperature fruit, adding ice to your smoothie will help thicken the texture and lower the temperature.
If your smoothie is too thin, try adding a little more yogurt, some extra frozen fruit, or a few ice cubes. If your smoothie is too thick, add a little extra liquid, or if you used frozen fruit, let it sit for a few minutes to thaw.

Use frozen fruit and only add enough liquid to the blender. After blending the rest of the ingredients together, add as much liquid as needed to thin the smoothie to your desired thickness.
Add a pinch of salt. Seriously. Only a few granules are needed to enhance the flavor and create a delicious smoothie.
This is one of my favorite questions because the answer is yes! Smoothies make the perfect base for a cocktail. Add rum or tequila and serve over ice or on the rocks. You can turn it into a fancy mimosa by mixing half and half with prosecco or cava. Alcoholic smoothies are a great addition to a bridal shower.
