How Tupac Died
It sounded bad to hear my brother say those words the other day, but I knew right away that it was true.
David and I were young when Tupac Shakur died. That was 20 years ago. We were in awe of the drive through Las Vegas; the four gunshot wounds; Pac died on Friday the 13th.
I called David because I wanted to remember why we were once obsessed with the rap superstar.

At the time, David was listening to “All Eyez On Me,” Disc 1, about 12 times a day. He took the music from a friend’s CD. My family knew what kind of mood he was in based on what track he started on. When he comes home from school and fires up “2 of America’s Most Wanted,” we know he’s had a rough day.
Me, I listen to two songs: “Hail Mary” and “Keep Ya Head Up.” I’m in my room at night with the volume down, because I feel like I’ve broken a rule. My parents never said anything, but I wondered how they felt about their little girl lip-syncing the lyrics, “Activate my hate, let it break, to the flame.”
I love “Hail Mary” because of the creepy, syncopated beat and that very first line — “I ain’t a killer but don’t push me.” I must have been 9 years old when I listened to this song. I don’t know what I could have done before, but I shouldn’t be ignored.

And I love “Keep Ya Head Up.” I think a part of me can sense that life as a black woman isn’t very fair, and I appreciate Pac being a pre-emptive ally. My favorite line is, “If he can’t learn to love you, you should leave him.”
“I mean, he’s cool, of course,” David said on the phone, trying to save face for his idol. “She’s cool as s***. She dresses cool and sounds cool and she’s a cool thing. But she’s so vulnerable. Maybe it’s just a poser who knows someone else.”
I don’t know if that’s what everyone likes about Tupac. To me this is true. Listening to him over the years, he seems to have what it takes. On “Changes,” Pac raps, “It takes skill to be real, time to heal each other.” The cool kids don’t talk about fixing each other. They weren’t injured to begin with. They didn’t even beg. But in “Hail Mary,” Tupac pleads, “Come meeeeee.”
(Of course, he can channel different personas. This is the same Pac who mocked Biggie Smalls with the line, “You claim to be a player, but I f***** your wife .”)

As two angry black preteens, David and I knew which version of black was cool in our preppy, upper-class, mostly white suburb of Philadelphia. It’s an Allen Iverson, Ja Rule, Will Smith kind of cool, where everything is attractive and sporty and badass (unless, in Will Smith’s case, it’s funny and crazy). David could go to school in a FUBU sweatshirt and make jokes in class and fit in. My fifth grade Iverson braids are not good.
But at home with Pac, we have proof that sometimes it can be dark and uncool and still live. Even if you write a book full of cheesy poems to your girlfriends. Even if you rap, “Come hear my truest thoughts, my truest feelings,” in a song called “Unconditional Love.”
When my 9-year-old self sings, “Some say the berry is blacker, the juice is sweeter” as I fall asleep, Pac makes me feel powerful. Poser or not, he helped me find my version of cool.
