I decided to use whole wheat flour for this recipe because most dogs are sensitive to wheat. But if your dog isn’t allergic to wheat, feel free to make this recipe with whole wheat flour and there won’t be any flour washing involved!
If you are wondering how to cook sweet potatoes for this recipe, you can peel and boil cubed sweet potatoes. Then mash it like you would for potatoes. You can even freeze mashed sweet potatoes in a silicone muffin liner for easy portions!
Peanut Butter & Carrot Homemade Dog Treats • It Doesn’t Taste Like Chicken
Or… bake whole sweet potatoes at 425 degrees F for 40-55 minutes until sweet potatoes are tender and skins have fallen off. Once the potatoes are cool, remove the skin and freeze whole sweet potatoes! When you need it, just take it out of the freezer and quickly defrost it in the microwave. Now you’re ready to make a homemade dog treat recipe in a flash!
Stir to combine using a spoon or your hands. I find it easier to mix this dough with my hands because it is a bit sticky.
If for some reason the dough seems a little dry to you, just add a drop of water or milk powder. Or… some more peanut butter or sweet potato. And if the dough seems too sticky to handle, a dash more flour will help firm it up.
Although this dough is a bit sticky, I find it very easy to roll out on a silicone mat with my rolling pin. Roll out the dough to a thickness between ¼″ and ½″. Since there are no raising agents in this dough, the thickness of the biscuits at this stage will be the thickness of baked biscuits.

Placing a piece of wax paper on top of the auto and using your rolling pin on top of the wax paper will prevent the pieces from sticking to your rolling pin.
Don’t be afraid to overwork the dough. You can reverse it and add some more wet ingredients. Water, powdered milk, or a little more peanut butter or pumpkin all work. Then, knead the dough again.
Or… leave this treat for 15 minutes for a crunchier treat that your dog will take less time to enjoy!
