I’ll be honest, it took me to watch Age of Ultron twice before I fell in love with this villain. Having watched the original Avengers so many times over the past three years, maybe I’m too used to Loki (who is still a good villain), but when I saw it for the first time, I was overwhelmed by Ultron. Thankfully, I watched the film a second time and was able to appreciate it for what it is without the shadow of the first film hanging over my head. Outside of Guardians of the Galaxy, The Avengers are probably the funniest movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Age of Ultron proudly carries that torch. There are plenty of jokes aimed at Captain America’s bipedal personality, Tony Stark is still Tony Stark, and even Ultron has plenty of funny moments.
But Age of Ultron is also smart enough to keep its comedy from being overbearing. When serious events do occur, the characters appropriately tone down the comedy to liven up the story and keep it from turning into a joke. It’s a funny movie, but sometimes it’s not funny.
Remember how Hawkeye was a brainwashed zombie earlier in The Avengers? We take special care in giving him enough screen time, backstory and development. Admittedly, this comes with the baggage of character rebalancing (more on that later), but at least it acknowledges the character’s potential and sets him aside completely like the first film. I am not pushing you.
There is no way around it. The “romantic” subplot between Natasha Romanoff (aka Black Widow) and Bruce Banner (aka Hulk) is downright goofy. And it’s the best moment.

But I’m rambling. The worst part about this whole character couple is that Black Widow undoes a lot of the character development she did with The Avengers and The Winter Soldier. She went from being a cool, butt-kicking female Avenger to… Hulk’s lover. And that’s basically her role in this movie. and
