Homeschooling and play dough go hand in hand and I’ve been doing it for the past 10 years! It has always been a part of my home cooking classes and today I am sharing with you my favorite homemade dough recipe.

In most cases, homemade dough recipes contain the same essential ingredients: flour, salt, cream of tartar, butter, water, and food coloring. These are different measurements that can create different textures. We like it!

Learning how to make play dough at home is easy. For this quick and kid-friendly version, in a nonstick bowl, first whisk together the flour, salt, and cream of tartar. Next, add oil, hot water and food coloring. Using a rubber spatula, mix everything together until a dough forms. Once the dough is cool enough to touch, start kneading and knead until all the flour is incorporated. Cool the dough completely before using. That’s it!

I always bake my play dough in the beginning. I mix all the dry ingredients in a pot and add the water, oil and food coloring. I mix quickly on medium heat until it forms a ball and then cool it on wax paper. Then I wash the pot and repeat with another color. Yes, that’s what I did. Then I said, “Baby ain’t nobody got time for that!” after all my boys wanted play dough every single day! That’s when we went to this no-cook recipe. They can whip it up on their own and paint as much as they want without needing me to paint. It even works with really hot water (which is what my 6 year old uses).

You know..I’m not really sure! Does anyone really know? I think it will be kept sealed for a long time. The pink puff pastry is almost never used around here and I’ve had it for over 3 months so I know it will last at least that long. My boys are notorious for putting dough together and mixing colors, so we usually make several batches throughout the year for each color we need. It’s quick and cheap, so I don’t mind too much. Plus, there’s something fun about playing with fresh dough!

Salt – This acts as a preservative. No one wants to have moldy dough, and little hands are very stubborn. (Always have your children wash their hands with dough before and after playing)

Cream of tartar – gives the dough its body and structure. A little will make the dough soft and stretchy, add a little more and it will make the dough soft and stretchy, not soft and crumbly.

Vegetable Oil – Keep the dough moist so it doesn’t dry out too quickly. (homemade play dough dries out much faster than store bought play dough.)

Well, look, I have to tell you yes, because technically you can. After all, it’s just dough. But the cream of tartar gives it the perfect batter texture. These are the bees knees for making silly snakes that don’t shrink after rolling and cookie cutters that stay soft and firm to pretend and play with. So, um…yeah, you can technically make the batter without the cream of tartar, but don’t. Your kids will thank you.

No, just store it in an airtight container. I store each color in a sandwich bag and then put the sandwich bags inside a sealed container. This keeps everything nice and soft.

1. Stir in the salt. This is optional, but we have “Play Dough Salt” at my house. I take a big box of dollar tree course salt and throw it into the Blendtec and blend it into a fine powder. It melts very quickly. Regular table salt will work too, but I really like the seasoned salt. Personal preference.
