NexGard can be administered with or without food. Care should be taken that the dog eats the full dose, and treated animals should be observed for several minutes to ensure that part of the dose is not lost or rejected. If any dose is suspected to be missed or if vomiting occurs within two hours of administration, repeat another full dose. If a dose is missed, administer NexGard and resume the monthly dosing schedule.
Treatment with NexGard can begin at any time of the year. In areas where fleas are common year-round, monthly treatment with NexGard should continue throughout the year without interruption.
To reduce the chances of flea re-infestation, it is important to treat all pets in the home with an approved flea control product.

The safe use of NexGard in breeding, pregnant or lactating dogs has not been tested. Use with caution in dogs with a history of seizures (see Adverse Reactions).
In a well-controlled US study, which included a total of 333 households and 615 treated dogs (afoxolaner 415 administered; active control administered 200), no serious adverse reactions were observed with NexGard.

Afoxolaner is a member of the isoxazoline family, which has been shown to bind to a binding site to block insect and acarine ligand-gated chloride channels, particularly those gated by the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), thereby blocking pre- and post- synaptic. the transfer of chloride ions across cell membranes.
